Double click Multimedia Audio Controller > Details tab > choose Hardware Ids from drop down menu > Right-click each line, click Copy then paste each line in a post here.

I've completed a system restore and the volume icon has reappeared, all is working OK again.

Computer says no. Take a closer look at the model number.

I have the same problem from time to time with the volume icon disappearing on my Dell T3600 running Windows 7 Ultimate. A reboot always restores it but I still can't pin down any particular action that makes it disappear. It's mildly annoying.
