Volume icon missing

The volume icon has disappeared from my system tray.
I've looked under > start > control panel > sounds & audio devices > under volume tab "No audio device" and is greyed out
Have XP installed
Any advice please?

Are you getting sound from your speakers? What soundcard do you have?
Start menu > Control Panel > If you see System click this, otherwise click Performance and Maintenance then System > Hardware tab > Device Manager button.
What is listed under Sound, video and game controllers when you press the + to the left of the text?0 -
Audio Codecs
Legacy audio drivers
Legacy video capture devices
Media control devices
Unimodem half-duplex audio device
Video codecs0 -
What motherboard model is it? You might still be able to find the XP audio drivers on the manufacturers website.0

Is your computer pre-built? What make/model is it? Re-installing the sound drivers may help.
Also in the Device Manager do any of the listed devices have an exclamation mark over them?0 -
That happens to me sometimes and I find that restarting the PC usually brings it backI'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!

Yes "Other devices" has a - and a yellow?, underneath it is another yellow ? next to "Multimedia Audio Controller"Is your computer pre-built? What make/model is it? Re-installing the sound drivers may help.

Depends on the soundcard installed, ac97 is common. what machine is it
has windows just been reinstalled?
try system restore if it just stopped working on it's own, or right click, update driver!!
