Switching service provider
Happily out of contract with Vodafone and planning to switch to Virgin. However, according to their site it can take a day for the switch to take place, and you should switch your phone off on the switch day.
Is this correct? In the past, I've switched from VF to O2, and then back to VF, but I'm pretty sure that the actual changeovers happened pretty seamlessly, with at most a few minutes loss of service.
So have things changed? Or does Virgin/EE have an unusual process/procedure?

You should have quoted this more accurately, but I think this just means that when the old sim stops working you should switch the phone with the new sim off, then on.
I trust this is accurate enough for you?
""Switching your number to Virgin should take no longer than one working day
When the big day comes, it’ll take a few hours for your old number to switch to your new phone. So be prepared to be without your phone for a little while! If you leave your mobile turned on during this time, you could get what we call a ‘split service,’ which basically puts your number in limbo. This means you might not be able to make or receive calls. So turn off your phone on the day of your switch.""

Well, I was wrong then. My recent porting was to '3'. They didn't require switching off for a long time, but I (and reportedly other people) did have 'split service' for about half a day when the old sim remained active with the old number while the new temporary number stopped working.0

Some switches happen relatively smoothly and with some you can be without any service for several hours,it does seem a bit hit and miss.
With my last switch there was only about 30 mins without a signal on calls however with texts it was more like 3 hours.0
