Just as an interesting aside... my past landlord of 5 years was a uk national residing in Australia. I used to pay my rent monthly to his bank account. Never knew about the tax thing. Maybe he was exempt from the deduction.. how would I check??0

Not exactly the same but I once rented a property that had already been repossessed. We rented through an agency on behalf of the bank. When they decided to sell we were offered 1st refusal and at a very good price compared to the market value.0

I don't know about your previous landlord, but didn't your agent tell you that the owner was living abroad?
If so and you click on the link I gave you in the previous post, you will see that HMRC expect the tenant or the agent to pay the tax for the non-resident landlord.
Just noticed that agrinnall also mentioned the tax issue.0 -
Yes on myprevious tenancy the landlords adress in australia is written as is the agents acting on his behalf but my rent was paid directly to ll. No one told me and it was my first time renting so honestly had no idea about it. He is actually now playing silly beggars about my deposit being released from the dps!!0

You sound quite a nosy tenant.
(i)You have informed the lender.
(ii)Your family have opened the mail.
(iii)You have told his agent he's in arrears.
(iv) You want to know if previous landlord paid tax.
Those who stick their nose in a honey pot........................
With the information you have I personally would start looking for elsewhere. This isn't likely to last long term for you.Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0 -
My 2 year old son ran to the post and opened that letter and one other which was addressed to me . It actually has everything to do with me and the interests of my family, I have 4 children, 3 under 3, so if we are turfed out with little notice then it is my concern thank you very much and as others have stated I cannot just look elsewhere. We are laible flr rent and bills and were looking for a long term let , long term as in years . We as tenants have had to jump through hoops with paying for and passing referencing and are now effectively sitting ducks with no idea or security as to what will happen to us.0

I think you need to teach your son not to open letters - and yes I have 3 kids. As for security. Tenancy agreements with private Landlords offer no long term security. I remember buying my first rental property about 25 years ago (I have a number) and I rented mine out without permission. At the time there wasn't Buy to Let's and it was a lot cheaper. The next I did the same. You are in no better position now after informing the lender.Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0 -
I was in a similar position in my last flat. Landlord overseas. Mortgage in arrears despite the rent being more than enough to cover it. There were all sorts of other letters from debt collection agencies too. An eviction order was made. Shelter gave excellent advice, but it was all very stressful.
You may find that your landlord is playing the same sort of game as mine was - letting the arrears build up, going to the brink, then paying off just enough to keep the bank happy.
And PS I did start opening letters from the bank .... self protection trumps an !!!!!!'s right to privacy.0 -

If the LL cared that much about their privacy they would either inform the mortgage lender of the correct contact address or pay for a postal redirect. It is not a crime to open someone else's post.
In the OP's position I would be concerned too if my LL was in arrears and didn't have consent to let.
As for the previous LL and their tax arrangements the OP could find that they are liable for the tax as it was supposed to be deducted before the rent was paid to the LL.0 -

Incorrect
Postal Services Act 2000
Under the Postal Services Act 2000:
“A person commits an offence if he, without reasonable excuse, intentionally delays or opens a postal packet in the course of its transmission by post, or intentionally opens a mail bag.”
“A person commits an offence if intending to act to a person’s detriment and without reasonable excuse, he opens a postal packet which he knows or reasonably suspects has been incorrectly delivered to him.
As for the LL on the previous property. She has already paid them and the only outcome would be her receiving a tax bill. Senseless.Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0
