I wouldnt worry about it. im pretty sure if anything illegal was viewed or downloaded and it was traced it would be traced to tennants IP addres and not yours? so if it came to it the police or whoever would know it was them not you?

You could stick another router on to your network. Allowing you to have a separate subnet for the tenant. That should increase the security. If you want to know a bit more drop me a PM. I'm an IT Consultant so know what I'm talking about

Strewth. I'm glad I'm not your lodger. Are you going to put a lock on the fridge and an alarm on the telephone too?

If the Lodger wants to watch a bit !!!!!! in private it's none of the LL's business.

That's your interpretation of dodgy, rather than mine. Opendns blocks many known malware sites. The lodger can watch !!!!!! if he likes so long as he doesn't bring an infection back to the network.

With some routers, it's possible to limit bandwidth to specific computers. You can also restrict times, or simply disable overnight. This won't stop illegal activity, but it will make it more difficult, and less likely to appear on anyone's radar.

As part of his rental agreement, you should state that internet use extends only to reasonable use, and does not include illegal activity such as downloading or uploading copyrighted material. You might want to have a discussion about this anyway, as legal video steaming (Lovefilm etc) in HD could hog bandwidth if you've only got say 8 MB connection speed.

I can see you are worried that anything lodger does may come back to you, but you might be worrying about this excessively. Prosecutions are very rare indeed.

When I was looking for a house to lodge in temporarily I specifically asked about Internet on my enquiries as i didn't want to be stuck somewhere with naff wifi. It was only after a friend pointed out my phrasing of the words "I watch a lot of stuff online" (but creepier than that, I can't remember the exact words) made me sound like a bit of an adult video maniac. That's not me at all lol I just like watching top gear in HD :)

I think I'd prefer an avid !!!!!! viewer to be honest. I can understand someone getting excited by tits and a$$, but watching some middle aged men prattle on about cars..............makes you wonder ;-)

My husband worked away for many years - we owned a second home he lived in on weekdays and we had various lodgers there over the years to help with the cost.
If they wanted internet they had to organise it in their name (hubby had access at work so wasn't prepared to fund it).

He returned from work one day to find the police there - lodger had been downloading kiddy !!!!!!. That was our last ever lodger.

please confirm for me, - If two computers share the same broadband connection, what is seen on one computer cannot be seen on the other surely ?

No, sharing a network connection does not allow devices to access other devices unless files are explicitly shared. Depending on network configuration a device could monitor the traffic of another device however that's unlikely to happen unless your network is explicitly configured to operate in that way.

Citricsquid is correct, unless you deliberately made changes to your computer there is no way another computer sharing your network/broadband can see what is happening on your computer or access your files. (Of course if the other computer user knows your username/password then that's a different matter.)
