We have an LG DVD/HDD recorder.
Quite why we have tolerated it's misbehaviour for so long is a pertinent question

Anyway, to prevent a divorce we need a replacement.

DVD play and record
HDD play and record
Freeview *only*
Don't think we need a massive HDD as we don't save much stuff.

Best buy, please? :)

What about a Freeview YouView box from Humax, get a managers special from Humax direct.
If you want a DVD/Bluray player buy a separate one for a few £.

There's not a lot of choice if you want a DVD function. I have the Panasonic DMR-BWT720EB, which I bought as a replacement for an appallingly unreliable Sony HD recorder (a misguided replacement for an earlier Panasonic HD/DV box which had served faithfully for many years).

I can thoroughly recommend it. You can find out a lot about it via users at AV Forums http://www.avforums.com/forums/blu-ray-dvd-recorders.113/

I have four Panasonic DVD and HDD+DVD recorders scattered around the house. I recommend you look at them first.

Have you tried looking for latest software update for LG I had problems with mine but found software update and it now works ok, only problem is it keeps switching sub titles on which are easy enough to switch off.

It's been sometime since I did it but basically you have to download latest firmware update from LG website unpack zip file burn it onto route directory of cd and put into player.

    Thanks
I just tried 'software update' from it's main menu and it chugged through the progress bar for a couple of minutes and then gave me the message "no software"

I will google and report back, but Mrs B wants the TV now, so, maybe tomorrow!

I tried the software update from main menu and it didn't help, I had to download file from LG website unpack and burn to CD. I was going down the same route as you and had decided on a Panasonic DVD recorder but tried the firmware update as a last resort.

I agree with the second post. 99% of what you want is done reliably with a Humax box. Is archiving progs to DVD really important?
