Credit Card for those with Adverse History

Hi

Just wondering if anyone knows of a credit card company that are good at giving credit cards to people with adverse history. I have £600 balance of my egg card which I have started to pay interested on after my 12 months were up. I have applied to RBS for new card with 0% balance transfer but they refused me saying I had defaulted a payment on a utility bill a few years back (which I have no recolection of!)

I don't want to dent my credit rating by applying for lots of different cards so can anyone advise who I can try?

Thanks

You could try Capital One Classic Visa. They offered me one with a generous credit limit when I had almost no credit history. (After 3 months arrived in this country as a student.)
  • Or try Barclaycard Initial.

TBH I am very surprised that RBS told you why your card had been refused. Plus utilities are not usually shown on your credit report, unless you had a CCJ.

I too am in a similar situation. i have £900.00 debt on a Sainsbury credit card that's 0% period is just about to run out. As i have done with the past 3 0% credit cards, i have applied for my next 0%er and for the first time ever, been refused.

i have been on credit expert and have quite a full credit history, with only one missed payment back at Christmas time (before i applied for my sainsbury card incidentally!) so do not understand why they have refused me.

by applying for another card with someone else, will it do damage to my credit rating. Should i be looking at a different group of credit cards? i know there are some credit cards that you can't balance transfer between because they are part of the same network.

i do need a 0% card. that Vanquis card mentioned above doesn't appear to be 0%er. It is capital one that have refused me.

    Any ideas - quick?

Please do not run a balance if you get a card with the above, the APR is extortionate!

Up to 59.9% APR!! wow!

I suppose these cards are good if you need to build up a new credit history, but the card would have to be paid off in full every month at that rate!

Your exactly right! but you must remember that theres a different way of looking at things, even if it is a 1000% apr if you pay it off in full every month it is 0% and it can still earn you money, if you save the amount on the card in a savings account for a month

So really it has the same benefits as any other 'normal credit card' (with no cashback offers.)

Just be careful with these types of companies, I have had dealings with both Capital One and Vanquis, just make sure you check, double check and triple check everything!!!!

  • I have experience of these cards, which maybe worthwhile sharing.

Aqua - Is actually run by the Halifax/BOS group. They are very keen to give credit limit increases every few months to people who use the card on a regular basis. Seem to have a problem accepting debit card payments to the account, frequently get reversed, causing grief and late payment fees. Also have problems with payments for "large" amounts - I paid a balance of £1350 which took 11 days to clear onto the account, which quite frankly I thought was unacceptable.

Vanquis - Seem to offer higher starting limits than Aqua, but less frequent increases. Customer service people very helpful, good payment system, although beware statement date to payment due date can sometimes be very short (10 days)...been caught out with that before. Interest rates generally higher than Aqua.

Monument - Up until recently, owned by Barclays, but sold to american sub-prime company. In some machines the receipts actually get printed with the words "Barclaycard Visa" written on it. Didnt use this card very much due to low credit limit (250), which strangely was increased after 1 months usage, and then never increased again.

maybe of interest to some people....

edit : when I say it is run by HBOS, I mean that the lending is owned by a company called SAV Credit, who contract out the admin/call centre work to HBOS. there is no other financial relationship I am aware of.

Just as a point of interest, by no way am I blowing my own trumpet, but see what you think about this....

My g/f 3 defaults on account, various late payments, 2 ccjs e.t.c. credit limit given £750.00..

I applied for a card, perfect credit history, 2 existing credit cards no outstanding balance, used every month paid in full every month e.t.c credit limit offered- £250.00!!! ha!

Just be careful, brilliant for people building up or looking to rebuild credit history!!!

what I think, is that in the same way your g/f doesnt fit the "profile" of a mainstream card issuer, you do not fit the profile of a adverse card issuer. I am curious as to why you applied, just for a laugh ?

it is quite funny though :rotfl:
