Thanks everyone and Closed for prompting me to try again on the Dell website.
I must have been getting tired the other night as I managed to get the correct drivers this time! Must say though that on the Website the drivers for the service tag I needed I still find confusing as, even again this morning, I keep getting different lists of available drivers displayed!........must be me.....

Will clarify my original grouse with Dell. Even after getting through to the correct dept/person to help with support the only answer I got from them was (I paraphrase) 'sorry, that's an old machine, it is obsolete, no parts or software available for it now. I'll give you a discount off a new machine though....' Patently drivers are still available.

Thanks to all for the help the machine is now fully up and running and I can progress the task and get the machine back to my friend.
...oh and Reflect rescue disk and image(s) taken too!

And it would be better to install SP3 rather than SP2 -- the Service Packs are cumulative, so SP3 contains everything in SP2, etc.
I have to take issue with you just on that etcetera bit! I recall that when I did this years ago, I found I couldn't install SP2 (or SP3 for that matter ) without SP1 in place first.
