Service pack/updates and XP (again, sorry!)

I know there have been pros and cons regarding Microsoft and XP's demise etc. but I am (slowly) repairing a damaged PC and as part of this I need to reinstall and update XP to get at files and 'settings' etc....don't ask it's a long story and I will not be able to piggyback the drive to achieve what I need!

I do not wish to perpetuate the debate regarding XP but does anybody know if the service packs and current updates will still be available after the 8th April? If not from Microsoft can you advise where?

If not I will need to get my skates on and download them soonest!!

I think they will be available at least for now. It is just that there won't be any new ones.

Agree with the above, but I'd download the Service Packs now in any case.

In my view it's better to install the Service Packs (especially SP2 if the PC is starting from a state without SP2) offline before you connect to the web.

Partly because it's more secure, but also because I think it's more reliable to install them manually rather than rely on Windows to download hundreds of individual updates in the right order.

It's even better to slipstream the service packs into a fresh XP installation CD. And it would be better to install SP3 rather than SP2 -- the Service Packs are cumulative, so SP3 contains everything in SP2, etc.

An easy way to do this would be to use nLite. It allows you to slipstream service packs, install MS updates and drivers, tweak settings, remove components, and potentially make XP faster and more secure.

If you add drivers to the nLite CD, they will only be installed if the relevant hardware is detected (particularly useful for getting XP to install on SATA or SDD drives).

You can also choose any relevant installation options for an "unattended" setup, which makes installation so much easier!

SP3 update pack (installs post-SP3 Microsoft Updates):

    Hope this helps :)

Thanks for all your help. Bit the bullet and decided to do it yesterday and today (reinstalled from the Dell SP2 disk, downloaded sp3 and updates).
So Pc now back up and running..........

EXCEPT some drivers are missing. I have been going round in circles trying to find the correct Dell drivers, download and install. All to no avail.

    Can anyone help, please?

Looks like some motherboard chipset drivers are missing? Device manager reports problems (missing drivers) for Ethernet controller,PCI modem and Video Controller. It's an old Dell Latitude D510 and dell support are less than helpful.

Everything else seems fine and wireless connection is OK. Dell Diagnostics finds no problems but there certainly is!!

thinks perhaps I should start a new thread.........?
  • I did the same with my old Dell laptop a couple of weeks ago and got the drivers from the Dell website, here it is for your model:

Thanks Jelly/Closed, been there but am confused as to which driver(s) I need. I have downloaded/run several (and fixed audio wifi etc) but no matter which I have tried to install the particular drivers I need have not been installed. Can you clarify.

Agreed, Closed, backup would have been good but only came to this problem late after somebody had effectively 'wiped' the drive. As soon as it's up and running fully Reflect will be used! It's a good bit of software!
