Just picking up one point I don't think anyone else has mentioned, You list Brighthouse - they are usually "rent-to-buy", so you have to keep paying the full amount or they come and take away whatever it was you bought.

I lived with my father at the time and his house was repossessed. I stopped paying but took the goods with me( i know this is very naughty) I was depressed near homeless and i had nothing, i missed a couple of weeks payments when i went in to the store to try and sort out an arrangement, they wouldnt help me they were extremely rude and made no effort to help me whatsoever they made me feel like a piece of s*^t. So i just thought F!!! them. Obviously the act was inappropriate and probably illegal, and the last 3 years of my life have been hell like i say it just needs to end now these debts need to be addressed, i can no longer live my life this way.

Do you have a parking space at your house that you don't use? There are websites like park at my house where you can rent your space out. Great if you live near/in a city. That might bring a few quid in every now and again?
The other thing I can suggest doing that has worked for me is work out your budget…so £50 for shopping, £15 for travel, £5 for this, £10 for that…whatever you spend on and actually take that money out in cash. Put it in separate envelopes. I find it much easier to keep track of money when I can see it, rather than using a debit or a credit card. I have £20 left this week from my grocery budget as I have been cooking from what I have in, so that will go into the savings envelope and eventually into the bank to pay some off a debt.
Also, use charity shops for treats for your boy…I have an 8year old book worm and this morning I picked up a book she has been yearning for for 99p from my local age uk shop. The spine has no marks on it so it looks brand new, and a fraction of the price of the £7.99 rrp. SHe also loves 'treasure hunting' in charity shops with me. She spots all sorts of bits that rarely cost more than a couple of quid.

Yes i shall be getting everything together this weekend, work out a realistic budget and look at what i have left for my creditors, i know in my mind now what needs to be done so hopefully i can get it into motion asap.

Many thanks to everyone who has offered advice today i really appreciate it, its suprising but extremely comforting how much a little support and understanding from people i dont even know can give me a boost and an added determination to sort things out.

I will try an update on my progress as often as i can and hopefully pick up further money saving ideas.

  • Keep using MSE in your spare time, the lessons you will learn, and the tips you will pick up with be invaluable to you on your quest to become debt free.

I and millions of others have save £1000's of £££'s reading this site, ok I have been using it a good few years now, but every little helps! :)

Have your read up on writing to the the creditors? getting interest stopped etc... I am not clued up too much about this, but keep posting and hopefully others will be along you have been there, and done that.

Check out the money saving old-style board to reduce your food and household bills as well. They are full of great tips over there.

Wish you all the luck in the world, although you seem very determined so know you can do this.

Keep your head up, and above all make sure you come back every few days to keep your thread updated !! :D

There is always hope. Everything can be worked around. I have cut my expenditure massively, and I was hardly extravagant to begin with….2 years ago I wouldn't have thought it possible to cut much off, but I have probably halved what I spend on food by cooking from scratch and dropping to value products rather than branded stuff, and using Lidl rather than Sainsburys. Lidl quality is as good as branded stuff, but for much less cost.
I once thought there was no way out of the debt I was in as well, but a day or 2 of sitting down, working it all out and I am doing fine, spending less, paying off debts and will be debt free in a few years.
You CAN do it, it just takes a little effort. :):)

Definitely :) as the thread has gone on you've sounded much more positive. As you said above this forum is a wonderful support, you sound like a good, honest and decent person. Like many of us you've made choices that weren't the best but realise you can't change the past, only work in the present to create a better future.

Good luck on your journey, seems like you're on the path to success now
