Where can I find cheap insurance, then get a car to fit it?
Options
Looking to buy a second car for my wife and I, both with full no-claims.
We want a small tax band A,B, or C. But we also have a 17 year old daughter who will want to learn to drive and then use it. I am told insurance is expensive, but whenever I look at an insurance site, they want the car information first. Is there anywhere I can get a cheap quote for insurance and then go out and buy a car to match it?
We're looking for simple, efficient, reliable. Don't care what badge, how many doors.
Over a few years the cost of insurance is likely to be more than the cost of the car, so it seems sensible to me to figure out the insurance first.

No, the idea is patently ridiculous. How on earth do you expect an insurer to assess the level of risk of the policy, and hence its cost, when the insured asset isn't identified?
It'd be like going into a pub with 94p and asking them to measure out exactly the amount of beer you can afford.0 -
I'm not looking for an actual quote, just guidelines.0

A broker may (and I stress it is a may) give you a ballpark figure for a type of car, but not a specific one.
If you put a 17 year old on your insurance, it will go up considerably in a majority of cases; why not have a look through Auto Trader or similar to see what cars you can afford, then get insurance quotes on those cars?0 -
I don't see the problem, they just use statistics. For comparison sites the variable is the different insurers. But a single insurer can surely cope with a set of statistics with just one variable ie the car.0

If you look up cars that are in insurance group 1, and then check the tax band you should find some suitable cars. I think it would be cheaper if the car is used instead of brand new and a small engine. It should help if you and your wife are also on the policy.
Maybe have a look around at a few cars that suit and then get some quotes on a comparison site based on their registration numbers to compare them.0 -
I think the idea of going out and buying a car without knowing how much the insurance is going to be is 'patently ridiculous'.0

Have you read the advice above? Your comment about the variable being the insurance company is ludicrous for a start. Coming from a position as having worked on writing the quotation engines for one of the UK's original 'direct' insurers, the variables include but are not limited to:
Vehicle type, age, specification, modifications, power, engine size, performance, number of doors, number of seats, safety features, value, original sale price, parts availability, parts cost, dealership network size, territory manufacturer presence.
Driver age, driving experience, job, licence type, living arrangements, marital status, type of driving undertaken.
Overnight storage location, daytime storage location, postcode area, geographical area, type of roads in area, crime statistics for county, borough, postcode area.
Let me put this simply for you.- Look for some cars you think would be appropriate
- Do insurance quotes on those cars
- Decide what to do.

Don't forget you can have two cars in the same class but one a common choice for boy racers - insurance therefore seeing it as a higher risk and higher premium.
Look online for different types of cars in your price range then do some dummy quotes.
Add a learning isn't usually majorly expensive! Adding a newly passed individual is!0
