My mum's totally in love with the cheap tesco ones - she picked a couple up for £4.97 or something daft around christmas time. They do fine, but chew through the batteries.

I have a zen nano that I'd heartily recommend, but if I were you I'd go for the Zen Stone. Bertie summarises the reasons pretty well - cute, no batteries, no software, easy to use, sounds good.

Almost unique amongst flash players, the Philips KEY011/013/015 has an inline remote which allows you to control the volume and to select the particular track you'd like to hear.
In addition, it comes with a neck-strap and an external battery pack in addition to the built-in Lithium battery. Headphones are good enough not to need replacing.

If you purchase it at Richer Sounds, claim your free pair of Sennheiser MX300 headphones with the website voucher on their Home page..

It's very light without the stylish external battery pack.

If you are happy to go the ebay 'Graded' route, I recommend you go for the 512MB model at £13.49; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Philips-MP3-WMA-player-Key015-Wearable-GoGear512MB_W0QQitemZ330149256596QQihZ014QQcategoryZ73839QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Though enquire before purchasing that all of the accessories are included.

With the 512MB model, expect around eight hours of .mp3 music encoded at 128kbps. The 128MB; two hours.

The two line LCD displays full track information, though as you have a remote control, there is little need to look at the unit.

i bought one of these on offer at half price specifically for running and the gym.

i wanted something cheap, as like you i already had a 'proper' mp3 player (a whopping great big creative zen touch) which was far from suitable for use when exercising.

i was initially disappointed by the lack of clip, however having seen the injuries that my friends ipod shuffle clip has caused i cant say i miss that feature any more!

the battery life is phenomenal, in the several months ive had it and used it regularly i'e only had to change the battery ONCE - i've never known anything like it!!!

tranfsering files... its drag and drop, so really easy to load up, but beware tracks play in the order that you upload them. i had to reshuffle, as i had gym music mixed with running music, and i use two very different types of tunes!

headphones are passable, the player fits easily into my shorts pocket or in my hand whilst i run, is easy to use one handed whilst not really looking what you are doing, and is so far proving to be pretty industrable - it is still wokring perfectly after a watery accident i thought would finish it off  :D

all in all, what i had bought as a cheap, potentially throw away mp3 player has turned out to be a top notch piece of kit for the money, and im really happy with it.

Also worthy of note (this pains me as an anti-apple fanboy, really it does) is the iPod nano - it's more expensive, sounds worse, breaks real easy, is lame in so many ways etc etc (feel much better for getting that in, anyway :)) - BUT it does have the whole Nike+ thing, where you can make it into a personal trainer - you put a little whatnot into your (normally expensive) nike shoes and it makes the nano work as a pedometer, calory counter, etc etc etc...

Just thought it was worth mentioning, as it's one of the few things apple have done that I think's quite cool.
    (see here for more: http://www.apple.com/ipod/nike/)
  • I Have an Asidt Gym Pal, it has a buddy clip, just like the ipod shuffle, and a screen, so that you can see what track you want to play, pretty decent piece of kit, you can buy one directly from the following links. I have had mine for a while now and it has never let me down. The Player costs around £20 and £1.99 shipping. I have around 300 WMA track and 250 MP3 tracks on mine so enough for the Gym
