Windows xp support ending

I am not techie and will not give personal info out/order anything online or do personal banking - I just browse and check prices online and write the odd letter, always printing a copy for myself.I can go for a month without logging on
I have only just found out this week about XP no longer being supported and I don;'t want to be rushed into buying a new computer before I know which one suits my needs
I was going to buy an intel celeron N2815 laptop but was advised to stretch my budget and buy intel Ci3 but am still wondering if it is worth me paying the extra considering my usage
Then I read about Lubuntu but am not confident enough to try that although if I ruin my old computer trying I can't seen how it would cause any more harm than not being able to use it on the intrenet anyway but..... after giving the matter some thought I am considering using my recovery dsic to take the computer back to factory setting/wiping all personal data from it and then using it to browse/ check prices and if I do get a virus(es)I can't see that it will matter if I don't log into my e-mail account or put any personal info on the computer
Can anyone think of a downside to this
Any advice would be gratefully received
Thanks
What is the brand name and model number of your current machine?
You can pick a basic laptop, suitable for your pattern of usage for as little as £200.0 -
I bought my current machine with a vista upgrade that I never used as was advised there were too many 'conflicts' I still have the upgrade diskNiftyDigits wrote: »What is the brand name and model number of your current machine?

I want to spend as little as possible and was looking at one for £299 -toshiba satellite but was told to go for the asus F551ca 4gb500gb £349.99 although the toshiba C50 ci3 in argos at £349.99 4gb Itb looked good too - I know I won't use that much memory but after being told to go for Ci3 they are the cheapest I could find which have good reviews
Any advice is greatly appreciated - this is my last day online!I am not a beige person:D0 -
I am not techie so when you say I would have lots of updates I don't know what that means and I don't need to back up anything as I don't keep anything stored - there were just 2 photos which I have deletedgrumpycrab wrote: »If its the original recovery disk you will have lots of updates to do.
You don't say you have a current problem so make a current backup (Macrium Free) and ensure you have a [STRIKE]current [/STRIKE](I meant up-to-date) anti-virus.
I don't have any problem with my computer except that it can be a bit slow which does not bother me as I hardly use it
I have just upgrade to a free trial of avast security in the hope that it will keep me safer if I do decide to go online and will use google chrome- I can't see how any virus could affect me if it did get onto this computer or am I being a stupid old so and so

Having xp tomorrow doesn't mean you will get a virus, doesn't mean you need to delete your data, and doesn't mean you need to buy a new machine.!!

If you recover to factory settings there will be many XP updates to download and install (done automatically unless you have turned this feature off). Many of these will be security updates which you should install (although some may argue this point!)when you say I would have lots of updates I don't know what that means
The problem without a CURRENT backup is that if you require to recover the computer you will have to do a factory restore...and I don't need to back up anything as I don't keep anything stored
If you have some time and are interested in how you may go about doing a current backup this is suggested reading

I bought a 'refurb'(in name only) laptop with a Celeron processor five years ago and I'm posting from it to this day.
You can just add more RAM to your PC and clean up a little, to change the performance for the better.
You can 'max out' the RAM for just £10.990 -
I followed your thread but just could not follow what I had to do - too complicated for the likes of me but thanks anywayso don't be, it will still work.

You can run a clean install with an up to date OEM disc. Can guide you through it....later.0
