It would depend on how much and how long you'd had an outstanding balance for? Also if the payments kept failing there wouldn't have been an arrangement in place.
Did you ask when you called for an explanation?
This would happen in general terms (as I don't have your account) when there is a balance on the account and no agreement to clear this.
We would send letters, call to try and set something up. This does go on for some time, it doesn't happen quickly.
If all this fails, we would apply for a warrant to enter the property and fit a pre-payment meter to collect the debt and pay for your usage through the meter.
If you're not at the property when we fit the meter, it may be capped, so you'd need to contact us to get this re-connected.
If you don't use any gas, you'd need to top up the meter to pay the daily standing charge and to clear the debt, the debt can be set at different amounts depending on circumstances but is collected weekly.
This as I say is general information, if you need me to help specifically with your account please email your account number and full address.

A number of the steps you outlined were not done. I certainly did not receive any notification of warrants to enter property and I was never informed of any failure of the arrangement. Is it possible to send my details but not on the forum? I would like your help on this please.0

No problem, you can email me your account number and full address to the email address in my profile page, I'll be happy to look at things from there.
I think the hand delivered letter you mention was the notification of warrant to enter the property.
Reminder letters and then debt collection letters will show on your account, so I can check all of this as well.
Thanks
