They are cheap because Renault have a terrible reputation for electrical problems, and the 1.5 diesel can be a lot of trouble.

The Nissan Note is actually based on a Renault Modus, with a Nissan petrol engine, and slightly more reliable electrics, they don't go wrong much, but have weak clonky front suspension, an ineffectual heater, and mind of their own wipers & lights (Renault's contribution I think)

Electrical issues much rarer on modern Renaults.

    But still a consideration.

We have had a 1.5dci Clio since 09 and it has been fine.

    Citroen Berlingo Multispace?

These seem to be pretty popular on the mobility/adapted circuit. Low sills, large boot area and easy to drive, plus fairly cheap to run and repair.

a Citroen Picasso would do the job.

Which one? There's been six different cars carrying the Picasso badge.

I presume you mean the Xsara Picasso, but early C3 Picassos and Mk1 C4 Picasso/Grand Picasso may well be in budget now.

I'll get slated for saying it, but a Citroen Picasso would do the job. I and my family have had four now, clocked up well over 350K in total (I had two as company cars accounting for 200K of that) and have never had any reliability problems at all. Routine servicing and standard mechanical fixes only in all that time.

All of ours have been the bulletproof 2.0HDI, no DPF, no DMF, just a simple bombproof turbodiesel. 50+MPG average, 60+MPG on a run, cheap to tax, cheap to insure, parts are cheap and easy to get.

Just watch out for rusted out sills.

Assuming the old Xsara Picasso. Can't argue with that. There's a fair few on taxi duty round here, and that's never a bad sign for a car's reliability.

Also Mk1 Vauxhall Meriva. Stick with the petrol ones and they're brilliant little cars that soak up abuse all day long.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?

Indeed - but I'd say they were getting a bit long in the tooth for the OP's apparent tastes and budget - and they're starting to get a real rep for sill rot.

on the newer C max (think 2009 onwards?), they have a vw auto box which is far less reliable than the older ones, and taxi fleets apparently avoid them.

Those Belingo's just have all the peddles to close to gether for people with big feet. :(

Who told you that Ford uses the VW DSG box?

As far as i am aware the Powershift box as fitted to Volvos and Fords is pretty reliable.

Certainly the biggest Private Hire fleet in the UK, Addison Lee, is currently selling off the last lot of non Powershift box Galaxys, 60plate.

Which means they have roughly 3500 Galaxys with the Powershift box getting hammered round London.

The autoboxes that were considered fragile were the one fitted to the Fiat Ulysse (spelling?) many years ago, they only bought a few and the VW Sharan box was also fragile. That box was also in the mk2 Galaxy.
