I passed Brighthouse today.
In the window was a Beko fridge freezer.
The cash price listed is £406-40, but the total credit price is £780. :eek:0 -

Let's be perfectly honest, it's hardly an ideal business model you have. You need to get a proper job which will bring you and your family a proper, regular, wage.
In the meantime, go on Freecycle for your area and see if anyone has a washing machine. If not, you can put a wanted ad on. I'm sure someone will be able to help you. Or even put a wanted ad in the window of your local newsagent.
Your current situation is caused by not having a regular income that you and your family can depend upon. After your immediate problem with the washing machine is resolved, that's what you need to address."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

A a quick google of the model number shows it's on sale at Boots Appliances (powered by AO) at £230 and £250 at AO and Cooperative.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

Expensive being poor.
I think a more accurate statement would be, "Being bad with money is expensive."
That can apply to people who are considered rich as those who are considered poor. A lot of the crap that companies like Bright House sell are wants, not needs. Does anyone need a new television or a new XBox? The answer to that is no. If there is something you really need such as a washing machine (although you could use a launderette or hand wash clothes) then you can get it cheaper from a charity shop or Freecycle (or a similar website).0 -

Geez, that's extortion. A Beko fridge freezer from AO.com delivered tomorrow is £219. BrightHouse are rip off merchants.
Mind you, I wouldnt touch Beko with a barge pole...they have a nasty habit of bursting into flames, but still, for a few months, £219 paid outright is more than reasonable.Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

The thing with bh is like you say, it's easy to get the credit, this is what they want though they love people on low incomes with no options to buy elsewhere this is what keeps them in business.. My only concern is I'm speaking from experience here ( although not mine close friend) it's addictive easiness and at the start she like you bought a cooker , desperate and couldn't cook for family poor credit etc etc.. Now has two lap tops a sofa , she pays around £80 a week !! And you know what if she went in the shop found a nice phone she could have that too !! I'm not saying everyone the same, here I'm sure people are a lot more sensible but to me it's just too easy, xx please save don't be tempted0

That's nonsense. My daughter got a second hand machine - quite old - it is still going strong three years on. Or you could always handwash while you save.
If you want to be bent over with BH prices, go right ahead. Madness though.0 -
Lots of very helpful posts so far, I have nothing much to add...
... except. I just wanted to plead with you *not* to get a loan from Brighthouse. Quite apart from the fact that you'll end up paying something like three or four times what the item is worth (due to their [STRIKE]crap[/STRIKE] 'five star' service package), you'll also run into terrible trouble in the event that you are unable to pay for a week or two. They will send big men in vans round to your house demanding return of the goods, behaving aggressively.
Try the catalogues. Have you established that a credit building credit card is not viable for you? If this fails, use a friend's machine or save up. Borrow money from a friend. Use the laundrette for a month or two, supplemented with hand washing (drying in the bathroom). Try the council.
Basically, do anything you possibly can to avoid these sharks. You will regret it otherwise.
Once you've resolved this problem, figure out a way of bringing more money into your family. It is not sustainable to continue earning what you do for the ad hoc work you do. once you're earning, work at slowly, responsibly building up your credit limit (paying off in full every month). Save a few pounds every month in an ISA. After a year or two, assuming you don't have CCJs or defaults, you'll hopefully be able to get 0% credit on card purchases should a situation like this arise again.0
