Hi all, apologies if in the wrong forum, thought this was most fitting.
We've had a small disaster and need to purchase a large appliance for home. I've looked around and applied unsuccessfully in two major retailers for some credit, bit have been accepted for bright house.
I understand bh is very over priced and that i would end up paying significantly more than if we saved up, but in desperate times....
Both myself and my partner work, but she earns minimum wage for an 18 year old (£5?) And onoy does part time. I am self employed and earn when i can.
I understand that i could find what we need second hand, but ive learnt fron experince to buy new with washing machines. I also know that we cqn wash by hand but we live in a studio flat so want to keep moisture to a minimum, so a spin is neccesary. We also could go to the local launderette but the weekly cost would equal the same as bright house.
I would love to save up and buy it outright but i don't think its a viable option at the moment.
Basically I'm after some peoples opinions. Should we suck it in and struggle for a few months or pay an easily affordable amount a week and problem solved but pay over the odds for the privilidge
Thanks in advance

I would try and find out if your Council does a Local Welfare Assistance scheme and try there, if that fails it might be better to rent one(theyre around £20 a month) until you've saved enough to buy a new one. Stay well clear of Brighthouse. Or try Freecycle you might be able to pick up a decent second hand one for free which will do while you save up.0

BH charge stupid rates of interest, on already massively inflated prices.
I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.
In your shoes, I'd struggle by for a few weeks, until I could afford to buy one cash.
How long will it take you, to save £150?0 -
Thanks for the reply. I'm a big fan of free cycle and am registered on the local one. From memory I think I've seen only one, maybe two in the last few years. So whilst an option, it could take forever.
I've looked into the local assistance thing in the past and I think you need to be on benefits though I may be wrong, and will certainly look into that.
You mention renting one, say hypothetically its the same price to rent one, or buy from brighthouse per week, would there be a benefit to this? I would own the machine in the end, and improve my credit. If I was to rent then I would guess the money spent whilst saving would equate to the Apr?0 -

It could be a matter of a month or two or 6 months. I work as an it repairman so works comes and gos and I hope to not have a repeat customer as I wouldn't have done my job right0 -
Depending on the disaster Local Welfare Assistance may help the Council will have a new budget now so the best time to apply would be now.
With regard to renting although brighthouse advise their washers at say £8 per week you also have to purchase their own insurance (unless you have sufficient home and contents cover yourself)which with a lot of their products pretty much doubles their payments. If the product breaks sometimes you have to wait a few days before they come out and fix it whereas with rentals its usually a same day fix or next day.0 -
If you can save it in a month or two, then I'd stick it out, and get something like this.

At least you will then own it, instead of paying for months/years.0 -

Thanks bp, I'm trying to find some info on this as I type. Looks like the best option if I can do so.
Regarding insurance I have home contents so would be covered on that. I'm not covered on the current machine as I bought it second hand and can't prove I bought it.
I'm still surprised I was turned down by Curry's. I have talktalk, an iPad, and galaxy mega all on contracts and always make payments.probably due to my age0 -

As far as i am aware Brighthouse don't report your payments to Credit Reference Agencies they only report defaults.0 -

In an ideal world I would, its just so difficult as I could have 5 jobs one day then nothing for 3 weeks. Advertising alone is £30 pw/!0 -
