I'd be fixing up a shelf simply for peace of mind.
Switch off all your gas appliance and see does the meter move, even a little bit you know there's a leak.

My electrician and the 'gas engineer' have also concluded that a shelf is needed to support the meter.

NB - I will be leaving it to the professionals and will not be doing any drilling.

That won't work if the leak is from the mains pipe to the meter.

No, the guy from nPower didn't leave anything. He didn't seem at all concerned.

My electrician has arranged gas engineer to look at it today.

Have i understood correctly that the meter is nPower's responsibility? And I should be pursuing nPower to make sure it's safe? At their cost? (Or mine?)

The meter is the Npowers responsibility, get them back to fix it to the wall correctly. In order to do this he will need to remove the meter and replace it. The correct way to do this is by checking for any leaks before and after the remedial work.

As this is their responsibility, they have to foot the bill for its secure and safe operation.

Please post back when it has been rectified to let us know the outcome of the tightness test (gas leak check)

The leak that the OP mentions would take a while to show up on the gas meter, a few hours, maybe a few days.

I also find it funny how on every gas meter less than 10 years old it has a big sticker on it that says.

IF YOU SMELL GAS CALL 0800111999

Posting on a forum for advice is the wrong way from the off.
  • When I had a gas fire fitted the gas safe engineer did a pressure check and found a leak by the meter.

Transco came out straight away and fixed the valve that was leaking . the engineer did that live.

My gas meter is in my kitchen in a cupboard above the back door. (It's a Victorian property with high ceilings).

The meter itself is not attached to the wall. It just hangs there and is held by the two pipes either side. When it moves - either when physically touched (it can be wobbled) or by the vibrations from shutting the door under it, it emits a bit of gas. Not a huge amount but enough that you can smell it.

Someone from nPower came out and had a look and said it was fine. However, an electrician is refusing to do some rewiring in the kitchen as he thinks it's too dangerous.

Where do I go from here? Who's responsibility is it?

    Hi Cloudydaze,

    Thanks for your post.

Has an engineer been round to check your meter? What did they say?

If you'd like to email us at the email address showing on our profile page we'll be happy to help.

    Thanks,

    David :)

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
