Stake Your Claim - I've been waiting a year?

I've just finished a DMP with Payplan :j and through them I started a PPI claim with Stake Your Claim. That was last February, and after several failings on their part with lost paperwork and just generally being rubbish, it's still ongoing. I sent back another letter of authority last month.
They've told me there are two of my accounts with PPI, so I know it's there, it's just a matter of trying to claim it back.
Lots of my friends have either filled in forms from their lenders, or written a letter with a template like the ones provided on this site, and had an answer (and cheque!) within about 6 weeks.
Can I go ahead and just contact the lenders myself, on the basis that this company I asked to do it on my behalf are not doing it?

You need to cancel with this company and get it in writing because if you don't and you win, they will take the fee.
You can do this on your own but make sure the claims co have cancelled your contract and that you let the banks know when you make the claim that you are now, not using a third party.0 -
Ok thank you, I'll call them now and tell them I'm cancelling. The reason I went through a 3rd party is I thought it would be easier, but actually I've still filled out all the paperwork and I'm chasing it myself. I'll make sure I'll get it in writing too.0

Good luck, do not do anything regarding the claims until you have it in writing they are going to cancel, I would write in to cancel as well.0

I started a claim upon recommendation from pay plan with this company.
Initally they were quite keen to get all the paperwork sorted - but this was last november time… then i had notification that I had been missold the PPI on one card. I sent off all the paperwork they asked me to mid Jan. called them around a month ago - told I would hear by 21st April and that barclays was usually good at responding.
Today, I phoned again, now told that they never received an initial acknowledgment letter 4 weeks in - so they would now have to re-send everything and the whole 12-14 weeks thing would start again. I am furious. I'd like to know if anyone else has the same problem - and indeed the OP, did you find out you could 'opt out' without losing out on fees payable?
(FWIW, I completed a PPI claim direct to Lloyds for my hubby on 20th Feb. Yesterday, the cheque arrived for £4k so I know how it is meant to work now…. I just didn't do it for mine because I was absolutely confident I'd never taken PPI out. Turns out they'd just added it on!)
interested to hear other peoples' experiences/

Someone's telling porkies.
There was a period where the PPI WAS added on without the customers permission, I recall paperwork and in fact adverts where the PPI was simply referred to as a standard part of the card terms and some FSA investigations have uncovered widespread instances of boxes being ticked during processing or the PPI being added later-some companies had the "opt in" box online pre ticked and hidden in alot of small print. Given that staff were paid incentives to "sell" PPI its clear many frequently added it to accounts to get bonuses without the customers direct permission.
In point of fact the FSA have stated themselves that miss selling claims cannot be dismissed simply because the figure appeared on statements each month, clearly it was widely seen as something that was "always on" credit cards.
Obviously loans done directly in face to face applications are in a different category.
