Hi,
I have a new laptop that I need to use when out and about.
How do I go about getting internet access for a laptop?
I know there are wi-fi spots everywhere, but what about if there isn't, how would I get internet access then?

If you've got a half decent mobile phone, with a decent amount of data included in the tariff, you can tether your laptop to it. This makes the phone a WiFi hotspot (give it a network name and password) and your laptop connects to it over WiFi, then the mobile acts as your modem.
Another option is to buy a separate WiFi hotspot device, with its own SIM card, and data tariff. I'd rather keep it all in one.0 -
To add to the above, even if your phone supports tethering and you have plenty data in your plan, your mobile provider may have a clause in the terms and conditions saying you're not allowed to use tethering. It's best to check with them before you go ahead and use it.
Your other option is mobile broadband. You have a choice here: either a wifi hotspot as almillar mentioned, or a dongle. A dongle goes in a USB port, providing internet to that computer only. It's not appropriate for most tablets and phones, but will work on your laptop.
Mobile broadband is available from the mobile phone companies. Try a comparison site (eg http://www.moneysupermarket.com/broadband/mobile-broadband/)
PS - If you're using public wifi it's not a good idea to access anything personal like your online banking. It is possible for a hacker to use a man-in-the-middle attack where he intercepts signals between your laptop and the website. Some would say this is paranoia, but to be it makes sense to be careful!0 -
Does your laptop possibly have a 3G card slot?No free lunch, and no free laptop0
