I wouldn't use TSB personally, as they are part of Lloyds banking group, as is Halifax. The risk being that Halfax collections may be able to dip into your TSB account. The same goes for Lloyds and Bank of Scotland

I'd also worry that the bad internal score you may have with halifax would be seen by TSB

Yes, TSB are still part of the Lloyds banking group. But their systems and operations are now totally separate form those of Lloyds Bank, Halifax and BoS, and the intention is that TSB will be floated (=sold off) sometime later this year. Lloyds Group has to divest TSB.

TSB won't see the records Halifax have - which is manifested by the fact that the OP could open a TSB account.

The TSB is part of the Lloyds Group at the moment. But TSB is due to be floated on the LSE in May, so it is most certainly a seperate legal entity from the 'Halifax', which is a division of the Bank of Scotland plc, despite the fact that both may well now be owned by Lloyds.

I don't believe that the Bank of Scotland plc will be able to 'help themselves' to the balance of an account held at TSB plc.

I suspect that the complaints have nothing to do with the closure of the account.
If they were just closing it you would get a cheque for the balance not having the Collections unit involved; I don't think we have had the full story here. To me OP is a very profitable customer for the bank.

I dealt with a case like this last year for someone against Lloyds, and the courts sided with the customer I was representing. This was in relation to fees being reclaimed in January 2013.

BCOBS states quite clearly that a bank account should not be closed in relation to a complaint, and LBG have been known to do this before.

OP, is the wording on the letter something along the lines of 'as you remain unhappy'?!

I've not seen anything in BoS or Halifax T&Cs that mentions a right of setoff with TSB Bank or Lloyds Bank.

The OP might be best getting a credit card that lets transfers to current accounts like MBNA or Fluid to pay off the OD over a few years.

If you wish, complain to Halifax about treatment but I would suggest moving on in the meantime.

Did the bank feel that you were excessively rude in the way you pursued your complaint?

I think the complaint possibly triggered a review of whether your where a customer it was good for them to retain or not, I suspect the overdraft being bigger than the payments in didn't help.

They can't. TSB, Lloyds and Halifax/Bank of Scotland all have separate banking licences.

Hi hoping someone can help as I have no one to ask. I have been a loyal customer of Halifax for 20 years and today after 4 seperate complaints of bad service with them an adviser called to say as I was not happy with service they were giving me 60 days notice and were closing account

I'm sorry that it will cause you problems in this case, and hope that you find a way through them, but as a general point, I have to say that I approve of what they are doing.

Why do people feel able to constantly slag off the banks, yet still keep using their service? If they are so bad, walk away yourself.

I hope that they start doing this wholesale. It might serve to remind customers of just how valuable their services are, and stop the constant bashing that we read about here, and in the press.

The business relationship is a two-way street, and if it has soured, then either side should feel able to walk away.

Were this four complaints in twenty years or were this four separate complaints in the last month or so?

Hand on heart: Are you a serial complainer?

Yes it says as you are not happy with our service etc which over the last year has been shocking can not fault them prior to this I feel that it is now because I am not depositing as much funds as previous

Have you been asking for compensation each time you make a complaint? Four complaints in the last few months will be costing them a lot in time and redress, especially if you're demanding refund of call costs for calls they don't think you needed to make.
Ultimately they can choose who to do business with and can close an account at any time with 60 days notice, regardless of how bad the relationship with you is.
