HPI Check

Hi All,

I'm looking to buy a new car and have found a really good deal. They guy selling it wants to get rid because he is leaving the country. It has about 12,500k on the clock and is a 54reg. He is selling for around £3500.

Seems like a good deal but I want a HPI check done before I view it. Does anybody know of a free HPI check or where I go for the cheapest?

Though just cos a car passes a HPI doesn't mean it's legit.
I've persoanlly never done a HPI check in my life, each to their own though

I second Chocolate Rains advice about going for the upgrade with the insurance. That way if it later turns out to be stolen, you get your money back.

My son's girlfriend bought a car for £250. When she saw how much it would cost to keep she decided to sell it on and I bought it from her, as my own car had permanently broken down.
This took place within a 2 week time frame.
Now instead of getting registration paper's back she got a letter from DVLA saying the car needs a Vehicle Identity Check. I'd never heard of this before but now I know! There is no place for such a check within a 2 hour radius uf my home -- I have to go to London for it, that's the nearest!
While I'm inLondon I might as well visit a friend whom I seldom get to see; so do I have to wait ages to get the VIC check done? Can I leave the car with them, go into London, and come back 3 hours later?
And what exactly does it mean? Is the car likely to have been stolen and might I get into trouble for it?
We've had the car sinece November and in spite of its cheap price is running beatifully now. There was a problem with it stalling at first but our garage cleaned some tubing and since then its been just fine.

    bump... any answers?
And what does HPI stand for, I assume it means the same as VIC?
  • HPI stands for Hire Purchase Investigation. The check is to see if there is any finance outstanding on the vehicle, it also offers other checks such as the mileage, V5 etc.

My advice would be, regardless of how good a deal the car seems to be, check it out!!! If you are buying it for tuppence but it is not the sellers to sell then you have wasted your money.
  • I've been looking into this lately as I'll be buying a used car ( probably private sale ) soon , on MyCarCheck they say this -
If you purchase a vehicle from a member of the motor trade you are automatically covered against outstanding finance. By law, if you purchase a vehicle privately and the seller states that no finance is outstanding on the vehicle you cannot be held liable. Completing the purchaser receipt that is emailed to you provides written proof of this statement. This form will also protect you against finance agreements that are not officially recorded and so cannot be revealed by a finance check.

I take it this means if I was to print out a contract of sale and get the seller to sign it stating that the car has no outstanding finance on the car and then it turns out that the seller did in fact still owe money on it the finance company couldn't take the car off me ?
  • Or just pay a fiver for a HPI check Wayne. Finance will be passed onto the nw owner if it's a private sale...
  • the cheapest i`ve found for an HPI check is at Used car expert website http://www.usedcarexpert.co.uk/page.aspx?numPage=10 it is £3.95 just requires registration which is free
