I have a dog and a 1 year old grandaughter so need something safe to use...any ideas?
So far as I'm aware, the only cases of serious harm to dogs from slug pellets have occurred when the dogs have eaten directly from the packet, or when the owners have mis-used the product by making piles of the stuff.
As for children, they have more delicate palates, and they'd have to be very resilient (and neglected) to swallow even one Bitrex protected pellet.
Let someone who knows differently post their refutation of this, with source references, please.0 -

Hens might try a slug once, but mine seem far too bright to get caught a second time. Tried it.0 -
If you have a small garden, then as suggested, go out after dark when its been raining and collect them all up. I flush mine down the loo.....:o
A few days of doing this and they are all but gone.

I got some slug pelletts last year from Wilkinsons that were pet and child safe.I think they were organic ones.0

I go out at night and pick them up and take them to the local field.
My neighbour on the other hand comes out at night and throws them over the fence into my garden :mad:I would like to be a glow-worm.
A glow-worm's never glum.
Its hard to be downhearted when the sun shines out your bum.0 -

Not a dog, but our cat ( yes, I know most cats are picky eaters, we have a freak cat) had to go to the vet after I caught her nibbling on them in my mothers garden as a young thing.
I think pellets attract slugs. I just don't like them. We get best effects when using coffee, eggshells and picking up poop regularly. We tend to do a slug patrol quite early at the weekends when I am afraid slugs are dispatched.0 -
Biological warfare.....I think I might have posted this before but here's a DIY approach to doing it. It's a bit...stomach churning.

Never tried giving slugs to my hens but i can 100% gaurantee ducks go mad for them, I try to let the ducks in to the veg plot as often as possible and fence off the beds so they cant get to the plants, just having my pair of Indian Runners loose in the garden has decimated the slug population0 -
Our chooks aren't too keen on the big slugs but they love the little ones and will fight over snails.0

Interesting! When I gave mine some, they just turned up their beaks. Not sure how they react to snails, as we don't have many, but I'll go look for a few and test them out.
Lomast, I agree, ducks love slugs. There again, there are fishermen who like catching eels! :cool:0
