Refused 123 Credit Card

I have just transferred one of my current accounts (Halifax) to Santander 123 and in the process applied for their credit card. As I hadn't had any notification about the card I rang them last night and was told I've been refused (Joint A/C).
I can only assume it's because I have no major debt and pay my current credit card bill every month. (I have also maxed out the 123 current account for the interest)
I have a totasl of 2 credit cards (Clarity which I use when travelling abroad and Cap 1 which pays 1% cashback on all my purchases which I spend approx £1500 per month and clear it every month).
Has anyone on here been refused the 123 credit card and successfully appealed?
If not I'm tempted to switch back to the Halifax for the £100 switch fee:mad:

Santander or any credit card company don't have to give you a credit card just because you think you deserve one!!

You simply may not fit the customer profile they want for the 123 credit card hence the decline.

I would wait for the letter from santander to see why you have been declined, as it will state the reason why and if it was credit file related it will say so.

Also your credit to income ratio maybe high hence a decline also.
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

You may find that after a few months regular use, including salary credits and DDs (ie main bank relationship) and especially with £20K in there, you'll be offered a guaranteed 1-2-3 card in your online area.

Leaving them now (as you appear to be thinking of doing because you're 'hurt') will mean a lot more work for you to get the same interest rate because you'll need multiple accounts to get the same, or better, interest rate on your £20K.

Seems a bit of a rash decision, to throw away cashback potential and 3% interest on £20K just because you didn't get a credit card.
  • Just checked my credit score with Experian to see if there is anything that has appeared recently and it is "Excellent 999". My salary including occupational pension is in excess of 35k not including my wifes income (joint account) so have appealed.

Whether it's going to be successful or not may be another thing.

This is the first time in my life I've ever been turned down for credit so not a happy bunny. (PS Only other credit cards are a Cap 1 cashback card in my wifes name and a Halifax Clarity card in my name used for overseas travel only).

Martins credit card checker gives me an 80% chance of the card as well just to compound things.

Go and see if Experian will give you a cash back credit card with your excellent 999 score....

So 20 out of 100 people in your circumstances would be turned down as well...

Enjoy the interest and the cash back then look again at getting the card in the future

I was declined about a month ago and subsequently accepted after an appeal. It took about 2 weeks to receive a response from them. In my case I knew the most likely reason for the initial rejection was due to a high number of recent searches (mainly opening current accounts for the decent interest rates) - I explained this to them and sent along bank and credit card statements along with 3 months payslips.

It's disappointing that after 10 years membership of this site you still give any credit to a CRA's "score".

I assume the Capital One cashback card is used for your main spending.
If it's in your wife's name you won't be the one that benefit's from a credit report which shows a good history of repayments and managing credit.

OP you don't need a new card - you already have 2.
