Can we Rent for Just a Few Weeks?

We sold our house 6 weeks ago and are purchasing another. We are so fed up with where we live because of noise etc that we just can't wait to go. (Our buyers live nearby so they know what its like!) Everything has been done for the sale of our house but we are still waiting for searches to be done on the one we are buying - two weeks ago my solicitor said it would take 2 weeks and now they are saying another 3 weeks!!!

Im a bit of a worrier and would really love to go ahead with the sale of our house before the purchase of our new one is ready just so that we are rid of it. My mum and dad live in a big house and could put us up but I just couldn't live with them for a day never mind a few weeks - I would end up killing them! Can you rent somewhere for a week or is it usual to sign something to say you are going to rent for at least 6 months?

What would you do? Just sit it out and be patient? Im so fed up with living here.

You could offer to pay a higher rent as it's not a 6 month guaranteed let. Alternatively, depending on where you live and how long you will be between houses you could go into a B&B.

Why are the searches taking so long? For most local authority searches you can go down in person and get them done there and then.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

If you really want to move out, and only for a matter of weeks ( a month or two max), try a 'holiday' let. Many towns and cities offer fully furnished apartments and houses to long term visitors e.g corporate stays or guest academics. Some proper holiday-holiday places also offer longer term stays at their properties. It will be easier than trying to arrange a traditional renting situation.
As for your own bits and bobs, view as an opportunity to clear out, then put the rest into storage (your parents big house?) or into containers. The container option is now very reasonable, and you can access them any time you want, unlike the old days when they were sealed until release.

I just don't know! I rang the solicitor yesterday and she sounded a bit rushed. I got the feeling she said another 3 weeks just to fob me off probably because she was busy! She said they had got some searches back but were waiting for 9 more. They are using a private search company and I don't know if this makes it slower? Im going to ring first thing Friday to see if any more have come back and hopefully she will have time to talk to me if its early in the day. I want to question why its took so long and I may even suggest that we or our buyers may pull out if it takes much longer. Do you think this will make them hurry?

Consider renting a holiday cottage. Advantage is that they are "ready to go" (but you will need to put your stuff into storage) so you only need to take personal belongings & food :)

Where are you? (I do wish you people would put "something" in the Location area of your profile  :rotfl: :D )

For example, have a look at the "Short Lets" link on this site. It only covers Kent & East Sussex, but if this is nowhere near you, look for a similar agent.

We are about to do this - I too have to move, so we're taking a holiday cottage for 3 weeks as there are 2 rental properties we are "close to" (fingers crossed!!!) - but the agents obviously want the usual checks & references which will take  2 or 3 weeks?

I sympathise - but a holiday let is the way to go for such a short period of time. You'll pay though  :o

As a landlord myself, I have done short lets like this in the past.

If you really do want to move out and rent somewhere for a few weeks you need to phone a few letting agents, explain the situation and maybe offer to pay a little more than the going rate and a bigger deposit.

Chances are they will know a landlord who is 'between tenants' and willing to give you a break.

In terms of your question, what would I do....personally I would sit it out, otherwise you are just giving yourself something else to worry about.

You will be out of there soon, channel your energies on hassling the Solicitor and Agents to get the deal completed ASAP - why wait until Friday to phone? Ring her now, then again tomorrow, or better still go and see her, become a pain and she will want to get rid of you fast!

    Good luck!

Many holiday lets will allow one, two .... three at a stretch. For six dogs, you'll need to think about kennelling them (more expense  ) or imposing on friends.

I know, I know ..... I've got two (actually, four officially, but two will stay with my partner's family on the farm)

Just remember that the purchase could go wrong, bad search results or even the vendor pulling out, you may end up renting for longer than expected.
