Help! This is driving me mad!!

Hi
I have a US based client who is proving a nightmare in terms of making payment to me. I can't take anymore.

I've got a credit card merchant account and initially she paid using her credit card. Then, inexplicably, she did a chargeback for half of the amount.

Now she's agreed to pay me the rest of what is owed. I've asked her repeatedly to simply do a bank transfer using her online banking in the US. She claims she doesn't know how to do this even though I've sent her all the info she needs.

She says she wants to Fedex me a US cheque. But I've looked into it and I've heard it can take 28 days to know for sure whether a US cheque has bounced or not.

Is there any way this woman can just pay me instantly or as quickly as possible?

I don't want to use Paypal or Western Union, but anyone got any other suggestions?

My bank is the Halifax - anyone know what they are like with processing US cheques? I called them to ask but the person I spoke to didn't have a clue.

You can ask the Halifax to collect any cheque received but this will take time - 6 weeks is not uncommon.
Beware however US banking law (and even common sense law) is different in the US - there is no such thing as 2-4-6 cheque clearing over there.
If the drawer of the cheque claims fraud even years later there is a chance that the money could be reclaimed - I have to be honest I have never seen it happen but with your customer - who knows?

I have to ask did you not fight the original chargeback?

    How big is the amount?
Why can't she pay by a card again?
For alternatives to a bank transfer/cheque see

Also, there are e-wallets like Skrill, Neteller, Paypal etc.

I would be dumping this client, who is probably trying to send you a bad (US) check.

At this point I am collecting the money she ALREADY owes me for work already done

I ask again - what reason was given for the partial chargeback?

    Did you fight it?

You can't do a transfer in online banking in the US to a recipient in pounds, just like UK customers can't go online and set up a dollar bank transfer to the US.

In addition to the alternatives listed above, Xoom may be an option also.

She claimed "incorrect amount" and later on she denied having done the chargeback and then a day later she said she must have done the chargeback by mistake. :(

    This is nonsense.

My understanding is that you could have had the cashback reversed if you contacted your bank and proved that the amount was correct.
