Item signed for but not delivered.

Afternoon,

My sons and daughters use site and apparently it is very good. I have never posted myself before so I thought I'd give it a go as I have encountered a problem; I don't want to take this to court as it is a lengthy process but I have a feeling it is perhaps my only option.

I ordered a PC from a high street retailer a few days ago. It was meant to be delivered yesterday. I have tracked the item according to the link that has been given to me which does state the item and my postcode clearly - the problem is that it says it has been delivered and no members of my household have received nor signed for anything. The retailer says that it was signed for yesterday but it certainly wasn't by anyone here.

It was no cheap computer at over a thousand pounds and I have a feeling that, whilst they are currently investigating I definitely have an uphill battle to get my funds considering they have a signature. Can they wash their hands with me and I will be at a heavy loss? What are my rights?

It was bought on a debit card as I do not use credit facilities, so I cannot claim on the section 75 protection I hear that credit cards offer, a bit of a bummer.

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards

Was this Yodel by any chance?

The contract for delivery is between the retailer and the courier. The courier needs to prove that the item was delivered to you.
Have you been able to ascertain the name of the person they claim signed for it?

From the information I have been given, the name that was printed when signed for is not any member of this household. Neither the forename or surname matches anyone here. However, they say it was delivered to our address at the correct number, street and postcode which I confirmed was correct.

No. Was the courier company Yodel?

What time do they allege the delivery was made? (If it was late afternoon/early evening then don't be surprised if the parcel magically appears today).

Have you checked your recycling bin, or garden shed?
  • It was not Yodel. Our recycling bins and shed are in the back garden which is locked and off limits to the public. We have no front garden.

Ask them to provide proof that the item was delivered to your address and not just any address. They have a signature yes, but some couriers will take a picture of the front door they delivered to - ask them if the courier they use have done this as this will prove they haven't delivered to your address. Or for them to ask the courier to describe your house/front door/car.

The paranoid side of me will tell you not to tell them what your house looks like etc until after they've came back to you with a description.

You neglected to answer that question. The reason for it is that some couriers are known to "self sign" for parcels (when pushed for time) and then to actually deliver a day or so later.

I had the same thing happen last week with an £800 order from Amazon. Sat in waiting all morning and when I checked the Amazon tracking, it said it had been delivered! This was the Royal Mail "tracked service" - I think it's only available to companies.

Contacted Amazon who offered to send another consignment or refund. They didn't seem at all surprised.

Hope it all gets resolved quickly for you.

I've had similar things happen - the company, after doing their appropriate due-diligence, refunded me without too much hassle.

Just maintain you've not received it - it's for them to prove you have.
Or for them to ask the courier to describe your house/front door/car.

Probably pointless to be honest - Google Street View can be used to get a detailed look of pretty much any property, and any inaccuracies can be put down to 'I deliver to hundreds of properties - don't remember all of them'

This has happened to me a few times. On one occasion the delivery company said they left it in the porch (I don't have one) and on another they said they gave it to somebody walking past my house (I live at the end of a cul de sac so nobody walks past my house and the delivery company shot themselves in the foot by saying they gave it to a perfect stranger).

I recommend you get a credit card for purchase over £100 so you can make a Section 75 claim.

You look on google for mine and all you'll find is my forecourt with a car I havent owned for 6 years in it. Thats not going to help them describe my front door and them describing my old car would be a pretty quick giveaway. Also wont work for any other property who's front door isnt plainly visible from the road (driveways, hedges, flats/shared entryways can all make this fruitless).

You might think its unlikely they remember details but in my experience, they do and I've never yet had a company use google to give me a description (the reason I made the suggestion is because it has helped me countless times over the years when dealing with this type of situation). Not saying it wouldnt ever happen (I recall a thread years ago where a picture from the street had been provided but no package had been delivered and google was suggested then) just that its the exception rather than the rule (again, in my experience).
