Tiny bathroom advice!

Hi folks, am looking to move into a lovely house but the inevitable compromise we are making is with a tiny bathroom - in fact just listed as a shower room. It is 1.85m x 1.2m currently holding WC a basin and quite a dated shower cubicle. If we have to have a small bathroom we would want to refit and make it awesome, making use of every bit of space. Has anyone had any experience of doing up this kind of limited space or have any suggestions?

Could you not pinch a little space from rooms either side?

One way to make it look bigger is to have the bathroom door open outwards.

I've seen examples where people have turned very small bathrooms into wet-rooms so they can do away with the separate shower cubicle and get sink/WC/shower all positioned closer together in the limited space.

Not sure how suitable it is as a bathroom basin but you can get all-in-one toilets - they have a basin on top of the cistern to save space and use the waste water for toilet flushing.

Oh yeah on doors into the room - could you fit a slide-door ?

I set my heart on coloured tiles for my small bathroom, but let myself be persuaded that white would be best. I am very glad I did: shiny white tiles meet my main goals: they make the room look bigger, fresher and cooler.

Another compromise I made was to get a wall-hung basin and loo even though I prefer Edwardian and Victorian heritage styles. Being able to see the floor makes a big difference.

Have sent you a PM detailing what I did with my tiny bathroom, and its now getting compliments.

Forgot...one of the things I did too was to have a wall-hung basin in order to help give an illusion of more space than the room actually has. Also forgot to mention my tiles are neutral colour too (but that's the fashion anyway at the moment, apart from some people choosing grey ones).

My bathrooms have shiny white tiles and coloured mosaic accents which make the walls look wider. I put in lots of slimline fitted storage in gloss white - not having clutter out makes it look bigger too. And we laid the floor tiles on the diagonal to make the floor look bigger too.

Where in the room the door is situated makes a huge difference too. Can you piklnk to a picture/floor plan?

My last bathroom was absolutely tiny & after moving in & getting it refitted I chose a corner quadrant shower enclosure & had the walls fully tiled with bumpy white tiles with a stainless steel trim around the middle & black & white diagonal tiles on the floor. The look was very classical, but made the most of the space & was quite visually stunning in it's simplicity.

In between the shower enclosure & the window was a space big enough for a nice white glossy floor standing unit with 2 cupboards, which was great for storage.

I also had the door opening changed so it opened outwards & didn't take up any precious floor room & had a towel rail fixed to the door too to utilise the space & bought a chrome free standing towel rail for the bath mat to hang on, along with other towels.

I chose a standard size handbasin as I didn't think a small or corner one would really be suitable for say washing hair or just simply having a wash down. A nice sized ornate mirror over the handbasin really opened the room up too, making it look far bigger than it really was.

You can also get space saving suites. I had one when my tiny bathroom was redone. Main feature is that the bath curves in towards the tap end to fit in beside the sink. Not how easy they are to source though - bathroom fitter supplied mine.

Wet floors are popular with us for small spaces but not suitable for all layouts as you do need to consider shower spray

With things like this, I always find the best way to get loads and loads of ideas is just to look at google images - just type 'tiny bathroom', or 'tiny bathroom plans' into google, and click on 'images', and you'll get hundreds of ideas.
