I wouldn't have even mentioned your suspicions that this wasn't a new drill; I would have used the phrase 'not fit for purpose' and requested a refund under the terms of the sale of Goods Act.

Thank you. I think the reason my parents mentioned that it was used (I wasn't there at the start) is becuase it was filthy and they were probably embarassed to return it in that condition. But I think that just probably muddied the waters a bit and made things worse. Why does it matter if they used it? It is obviously faulty, less than a week after purchase.

Threaten them with going to your local Trading Standards - retailers are more frightened of them getting involved than almost anybody else!

Are they? Never found that myself. In fact i've often found TS to be toothless. And they don't really deal with individual cases.

I'm a retailer I've always found them to be very pleasant. Infact any customers that threaten that I just hand out our local offices number to them.

Why do you think otherwise? It's amazing the assumptions people make.

Used to own a shop and admittedly if a customer made such a thread they'd get similar treatment - except I didn't have a head office so usually just got handed directions to the nearest door. Although I later decided to have somebody else deal with complaints due to my lack of impartiality - it's so very different when it's your money being spun.

The same people that said this !!!! was usually the same people whose son is a lawyer or solicitor and trying to enforce their rights under the 'consumer goods act'. :D

I've found The Range's customer services to be exactly nil! Head office will probably refer you back to the store manager :-(

I can assure you, it only became heated when the manager used the word "liars".

To be honest if she had been polite, we would have probably let this go, it is only £12, but her behaviour is what has spurred me into action.

This woman not only called us liars, but she also stated it was against company policy to accept returns on electrical items (I kid you not), it was up to us to prove the drill was used when we purchased it and she would lose her job if she accepted the return, all of which she refused to put in writing. I may be a newbie here and am not up on my consumer rights but I know when I am being insulted and being lied to.

We have all had problems returning items but this was something else.
