That's unclear too, given that the OP said it was sent "about" two months ago, and we don't know whether it was actually two months or not.
The OP should post the notice here, and also the date it was issued, plus the last day of the rental period.
If it was less than two months before the last day of rental period, there's no "spirit of issue" to be bothered with - he did not give adequate notice to find another place, and the landlord is clearly being unreasonable.
If that's not the case, then asking the landlord n icely would be the next step.0 -
It sounds as if these tenants have had a good relationship with their Landlord but it is her partner, don't know if he is new or not, who is kicking off and trying to be the big I am. It is nothing to do with him. Check you have been given proper notice, CAB or local housing dept. can help with this, this is the important first step then you know what your position is.
I would not rely on the police helping, they don't seem to know anything about things like this, I know they are hopeless about bailiffs, but you may be lucky.
Find out your legal position, if you have not been given proper notice tell your Landlord, not her partner, and explain that you have arranged to leave but need another 2 weeks and show her the paperwork. If you have been given proper notice tell her, once again not her partner, what your situation is, but even with proper notice you do not need to move out straight away. But you could save yourself agro and negotiate. Agree to move on Friday on conditon that she checks the property on Friday and gives you your deposit in cash that day and go on holiday or if you cannot take time off work book yourself in somewhere nice and that will be the end of the problem, it will be over and you will have your money and nothing to worry about

The LL can't just move people in, or change the locks - if she wants you out, she has to get an eviction order. If she breaks the law by touching your stuff or coming into the house, call the police on her.poppy100

Ok, I've both rented and let my property and never had issues like this because I apply common sense. I really hope, reading this, that I never have an issue like this. If you're given 2 months to find somewhere, go find somewhere, that is more than adequate time to get your act together and just out of common decency I would be embarrassed to ask for an extension and certainly not to demand it or threaten to change the locks, etc. Most assured shorthold agreements have clauses to say locks cannot be changed and that the landlord can, with reasonable notice, show people round in the last 2 months of the tenancy. I imagine that your landlord is partly panicking that you might be a tenant like the ones on this forum and is terrified you're going to blockade the doors, etc which is every landlord's worst nightmare. She probably has also made plans and has reasonably expected those plans would go through ok. Personally, I would accept it as my mess for being so disorganised, take some responsibility and find somewhere else to stay. I hate the prevalent attitude of using the law to try and weasel out of things instead of acting with a degree of integrity.
PS - You should make sure your next landlord is putting your deposit in one of the now legally mandatory deposit schemes.
