Paying for extended warranties is one big scam don't fall for it.
The reason that companies like Panasonic now offer "free" five year warranties is because EU legislation requires the kit to be fit for purpose for 5 (or 6) years after purchase. They are liable anyway so offering a free extended warranty is a nice little marketing ploy.
