Plasma TV - Extended Warranty ?

Forum newbie.

Hi,

I'm currently contemplating upgrading to a plasma TV in the near future. Have been do some price comparisons on various online sites and can see a big difference on the same models. The Panasonic model I've been checking out is around £650 at its cheapest and £899 at John Lewis, including a 'free' 5 year warranty. Is the difference in price justified ? Are extended warranties worthwhile ?

think of it this way, the telly now will cost you £650, bank the £250 you are saving, you will have a minimum 1 year warrently, in 5 years what do you think a plasma tv will be worth ?? 5 years ago a cheap PC was £1000 now a good one is £500
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

When was the last time you have a faulty electronic goods item? Most TVs will last 7+ years anyway without any faults. It's very rare TVs go wrong and in 5 years time it will be out of date and superceded by 3 models at least. If they do go wrong will be within a few weeks of purchase and down to faulty manufactured parts or damage in transit.

5 year warranties aren't worth it IMO. Some credit cards like Nationwide will give you a free extra years extended warranty anyway on electrical good like TVs (up to 37").
  • Hi
My Pioneer Plasma went wrong after 3 years, I was so pleased I bought from John Lewis who price matched Richer Sounds and it came with a 5 year warranty. But that was in the days before plasmas were cheaper than a grand.

  • My brother is a panasonic engineer and believe me, when he says to get an extended warranty (even on a Panasonic plasma!) then i would get one. The price of parts for these things can be very steep if you need to replace panels etc.

    It's not worth £250, that's for sure.

You can buy a stand alone warranty that will cover multiple electrical items for way less from an insurance company. Norwich Union, now Aviva I think, used to do one and I guess they still do.

Have a good look around and if possible wait a while for a good deal to pop up. I got a 42 inch Panasonic plasma late last year for £550 with a free Panasonic 5 year warranty included, because Panasonic were doing a promotion with certain retailers and were offering the warranty free to those retailers who did the most trade with them. £550 was also the cheapest price I could find anywhere for it and they offered local delivery for free.

PS which model are you looking at?
  • Quite often Panasonic do a free five year warranty if bought from one of their dealers.

M&S also do the 5yr warranty on big TVs. Thought John Lewis did price matching?

    HI...
Even I had problems with my Sony Tv a month or two back ago. Its just 2 years old and the warranty from Sony got expired. Then i thought of taking up an extended warranty, after lot of research I got it done from Consumer Priority Service. My mind was clear that when I have already spent a good amount of money on my latest Tv, I should keep it in perfect condition. With consumer priority service I am very satisfied and my Tv is in excellent condition now. As good as new!!!!!

I thought consumer priority services were based in America. Do they now operate in the UK?
