This is my first time so please be gentle
I am on bottled gas and its running very expensive. So thought about costing mains put in. Thought national grid did it web site showed £181 with own trench gave them a call to be told my address isn't on their patch but northern vs would install. Rang them to be told£350 with own trench. Dis some research OFGEN CAB to see if there was anyone else could install. Gave up and called northern gas to be told not in their area with but a company called GTC Pipelines their website indicates they prefer multi installations but will do one off for around 1500 ouch. I am 68 I would have to live to be 200 for it to be of any monetary value :A. Can anyone other than GtC install the pipe. This is a council estate not a rich area. I own the house so didn't get connected when tennents were done. Please help if you can

I think British Gas also install, but dont know whether that then ties you into a contract with them or costs involved.0

1st - I'm sure you can't be tied in to a contract. Infrastructure (gas pipes) is totally seperate from supply (gas).
To be honest, figures like £181 & £350 are peanuts. I'm amazed. How far is the peoperty from the nearest mains? See

Home owners, except those on new building sites should contact their Gas Supplieror Gas Transporter, in most cases National Grid Transco if they need a gas serviceconnected to their homes. The gas Transporters (GT) license conditions obliges the GT to make connections to any property which lies within 23 metres of a gas main and consumes less than 2,196,000 kW per annum. The GT must provide the connection to the gas main and the first 10 metres of pipework locatedoff the home owners premises free of charge. Full details on how to get connected can be obtained by contacting The Office of Gas and Electricity Markets ofgem.[/FONT]

Thanks so much, I've learned a lot more my gas transporter (thanks for right name) is an independent GT so looks like we have to pay more to suppliers as well as more for connection. My connection length is 16 strides but I'm only 5'1. So next research is to see if their licence mentions the first 100 meters being free. Both national grid and ofgem show my area as Northern gas so I must be in a small pocket for GTC. cheers0

Did you get anywhere with this?0

Some postcode areas can get a gas pipe installed for free. I did last year under Northern Gas Networks. They didn't dig a trench, they used a moling system to borrow the pipe under the garden.
To do if you postcode falls into one of the lowest 15% of deprived areas or something. Not means tested.0
