Why? A hot, nutritious and filling meal is just what they need, and for some, that might be the only hot meal they get.

How is a hot meal more nutritious than a cold one? It's what's in it, rather than what temperature it is, that matters.

Just seems like a lot of food, you wouldn't have two teas at home.

But they would still be eating irrespective of whether they had a cold packed lunch or went home for lunch instead.

The fact that the school dinner is hot doesnt make much of a difference, a child could go home for lunch and eat twice as much if it was put in front of them.

I didn't say that it was. Ok, I'll rephrase it if you want....'A nice hot meal', I nearly put a nice hot filling meal but thought better of it as no doubt you'd be saying a cold meal can be filling too....which of course it can be. :)

It was basically in response to someone expressing disbelief that a child could be having two hot meals a day, which I don't understand? I nearly always had a hot lunch at school, and then another one at home, not always of course, but a lot of the time, and can't see any problem with it?

But a sandwich is barely comparable to a full blown hot dinner.

Yes, my kids do. Lunch would be smaller/simpler than dinner. Of course, I do also make sandwiches at the weekend but mainly that is reserved for outtings.
If we go out to eat lunch then dinner in the evening maybe smaller, depending on what and when we ate.
Children are very high energy and nearly always want to eat.

Granted during the weekend they may not burn as much energy but during the week it's all go. Even learning burns up energy.

I just meant a hot meal tends to be much bigger that a packed one.

You wouldn't have two teas no, but lunch and dinner are usually about 4-5 plus hours apart.

There's not a problem with it, but neither is there a need for it.

I'm referring to tea as a hot dinner not the mealtime.

That very much depends on the portion sizes of whats being given.

Plus some parents will pack a few sandwiches, plus fruit, crisps etc.

Whether kids eat them all or even the school dinner is another matter.

Hot dinners have been part of schools for a very long time, dont see that dying out any time soon, the thing is, parents have a choice as to whether they send their child to school with a packed lunch or whether they get a school meal.

Unless the children get a free school meal. Im also assuming there are cold options such as salad and rolls in the school dinners as well.
