Paid Deposit on Car - Turns out it has Outstanding Finance
Comments

It's this kind of reason that I would never pay a deposit of this type via bank transfer. Always use a credit card for this kind of thing.
If a dealer kicks up about you using a cc, pay the deposit on a card, to hold the item and just get them to refund back to the card when you pick up the car and replace the deposit paid on a card with cleared funds, or cash.0 -
Obviously I wish I had used my card. To cut a long story short my Dad recently passed away, and he had the same name as myself. The helpful people at Clydesdale Bank managed to close my bank account and cancel my card instead of his, so a lot of hassle reinstating direct debits etc.
My card was cancelled and I hadn't received my new one when I viewed the car, so bank transfer was the only option I had.
I'm just hoping they won't be too awkward about it. Haven't had any reply since I said this at 11.45 this morning.0 -

They can not enter clearly defined private property, if it is parked on a street, or driveway with no locked gates it is an easy pick.
This leaves you with no car, no money and a dodgy dealer to chase.
*sigh*
Its an admin problem. It will be sorted.0 -
Seems they're saying it is an admin oversight - Arnold Clark being the main dealer. They say I can collect the car tomorrow, although it won't be in black in white until next week.
They understand I don't want to do this, so they're offering to bring the car to me when they have it in black and white. I'm happy to wait til the middle of next week if it means it's definitely confirmed - saves me waiting 2/3 weeks as well.
Thanks for everyone's help so far!0 -

Do you actually believe the drivel you post?0 -
Ask for the deposit money off the outstanding price, so if you paid £500 deposit and were due to pay £5000, ask to pay £4500 as a "we're sorry".0

Not sure why the dealer should compensate for an error by Santander.
Lets not forget that buying from a bonafide dealer automatically gives the buyer good title.0 -

As bigjl has intimated I think that's unlikely and unreasonable.0 -
Sounds feasible, asking AC for a real discount. They're as likely to cancel the deal and blacklist you rather than losing a penny for the kirk.0
