sorry to resurrect this but I am trying to hire a car at Alicante airport with Solmar via DoYouSpain who I have used many times. However I want to pay when I collect the car but can see no option other than to pay as i book. Please can anyone tell me how to avoid paying now? thanks

Back in January of this year, I made an online booking with DoYouSpain for a 14-day car hire in Menorca from 21June to 05 July. The price for the car (4-door Opel Corsa, tank full to full) was a mere €199.96, all inclusive (£164 approx) and was miles cheaper than any other quote I had found through various online checks. I already have my own hire car excess insurance so did not require additional excess cover.

The actual car hire operator was given as Budget Rent-a-Car (operating from the Avis desk at Mahon Airport) and, on getting an identical quote from Budget's own website, their price was almost double! However, having read several complaints on various forums re DoYouSpain customers being asked for additional monies on collecting the vehicle, I emailed Budget's UK office and got a response confirming that " all compulsory items are included so there’s nothing extra to pay unless you want to purchase extras or the car is returned without a full tank."

On arrival at the Avis desk in Mahon, I was offered a couple of upgrades (which I refused) and was given the keys to a brand new Opel Corsa with only ten miles on the clock. It was explained to me that, although I had stipulated a "full to full" fuel policy, I could return it empty and they would charge me only €62.03 for filling up the tank, which they claimed was cheaper than I would pay for a full tank at any local filling station - I was told to check the prices during my hire period and decide whether or not I would return the car with a full or empty tank. During the fortnight, I found prices for unleaded fuel were around €1.45 per litre and to fill the 45 litre fuel tank would cost around €65.25 - a little more than the quote from Budget. However, to gain any benefit from their offer, I would have to leave absolutely nothing in the tank when returning the vehicle - not an easy task. In the event, I topped up the tank about three days before the end of the hire period and, even with several shortish runs afterwards, the fuel indicator was still showing full when I returned the car.

The payment of €199.96 was made at the time I collected the car - NOT at the time of booking.

I had no problems whatsoever with the car hire and would certainly not hesitate to use DoYouSpain again in the future. Register with them and you'll get regular emails with some very special offers at considerable savings.
  • I have used them (Do You Spain) many times and had no problems until the last time.
It would appear that they work "hand in glove" with the actual car hire firms that they use for a percentage and if everything goes ok then they are normally good.
However I was scammed by Goldcar who claimed that I had damaged a car last September and took a lot of money off my credit card, I have since used DYS twice in the last 6 months with other hire firms again with no problems until now.
I paid up front with DYS for a car in August and found on arrival at Almeria airport that I had been "blacklisted" by Goldcar and I was refused the car that was booked and had to make a last minute booking with another firm.
Since then I have tried in vain to contact DYS for a refund on something that I didn't receive but have had no reply at all.
It would appear that the contracts with the actual car hire firms mean more to them than their customers and we are only a "little fish in a big sea"
As I said everything normally goes OK until you have a "problem" and like most car hire firms that I have dealt with over the last 40 years they will just ignore you and hope you will go away.
For anyone that is intending hiring a car from Goldcar I would suggest Googling "Goldcar complaints" and make up their own minds on the thousands of pages/blogs etc, if you can believe a small percentage of what you read (and lets face it a lot is rubbish) then that is still a lot !
