Car Insurance/Awareness Course Advice

Hi all,

I have been driving for a couple of years now and have recently received my first renewal for my car insurance due in a couple of weeks time.

When I took out my car insurance last year I did it via a comparison website and it only asked whether I had any driving convictions. I had attended a traffic light awareness course the year before when I was on my fathers insurance policy, but as it only asked for convictions I stated "no".

On my renewal it stated "Have you or any driver been involved in any motoring offences in the last five years, including fixed penalties, convictions, driver awareness course or disqualification or have any pending prosecution another other than those listed?" and has nothing listed.

I checked the website of the company and my original document and have realised that it does include the same paragraph about the driver awareness course.

I will not be renewing my policy with my current provider as found a better quote from an alternate provider. This time direct. In the application for the new provider it doesn't ask whether I've attended a driver awareness course.

This is all left me confused and I'm unsure of what the best action is for me to take and how would this affect my No Claims? Please help.

Thank you

this is admiral, yes if you go with them need to say no if another company
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Wouldnt impact your NCD but if they found out then you'd have to pay any back premiums due for the non-declaration

Insurers are increasingly asking about speed awareness type courses but the majority still dont. The rules with aggregators is always the same, answer the questions asked but then also check the quote on the actual brokers/ insurers site too.

Modifications are another area where people get unstuck. Confused.com only ask for post manufacture modifications but Admiral Group brands want all modifications including optional extras at the time of manufacture. The worst of it is that Confused.com is owned by Admiral Group so why they have the disparity of questions is particularly bad.

I cannot see why you should, if they do not specifically ask don't volunteer, answer only what they want to know, that is important.
  • I went to a Driver Awareness course a few weeks ago and they said that if any insurance companies you spoke to asked about it then you should hang up as it might go on record.

Not sure how that would relate to comparison websites or if it will affect NCD but I would be interested to know too..

My understanding is it does affect the NCD and it will increase the premium.

Premium it may impact, though not all insurers are interested and some will have a negligible impact for a single low level motoring conviction when otherwise you are a very good risk

In what way do you think it impacts NCD?

Sorry no of course it will not affect NCD, I was thinking it was an accident, brain a bit numb :o

Thank you for all your responses.

My main concern is that although my new insurer has not asked me whether I have attended a driver awareness course, when they check with Admiral for confirmation of my No Claims it will show that I have not attended an awareness course, even though I have.

Can an insurer backdate by policy to include the awareness course even for a year where I did not make a claim?

Will it though, they will just be confining your NCD, I would have thought

Yes, if they accept you made an honest mistake. Obviously if they think you were being fraudulant and intentionally lied by not declaring it then they can void your policy retrospectively as well as load your fraudulant activities to CIFAS which then goes on your credit reference file.

At the end of the day if your current insurers dont check what you have declared, they are more interested in what you havent when checking with another insurer. In theory they could let their competitor know that you had failed to declare something to them but it is fairly unlikely
