Laptop just switching off - bbc-iplayer?

Yesterday, I was downloading a programme with bbc - iplayer when my laptop decided to shut off, no warning, just clicked straight off, I got it back on, it ran for a little while then did it again. The third time it wouldn't start straightaway, it said it had wanted to test and repair. It went through its tests and all came up as successful except the restore that it had asked if I wanted to do. I restarted it, looked at the health monitor which said all was ok and carried on. All was ok until I was watching the programme that had been downloading, it switched off again, twice during it.
I uninstalled it today and re-installed, again had the laptop switch itself off whilst downloading a program, only once this time, just started to watch the downloaded program and its gone off again. Switch back on and have been working on other things with no problems.
I have recently switched to the new version of i-player and wondered if anyone else had had problems with it?
Or has anyone any suggestions as to why it would just switch off like that without shutting down?
TIA

I'm guessing that it is streaming at the max bitrate and your Laptop is overheating.
Not sure, but you may be able to change the bitrate the player uses, although that may lower the quality.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

backup and create recovery cd before you do anything else. http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
and make sure vents aren't covered.!!

I do have a recovery disc and I backup up last week but will do again.
The vents aren't covered and it can get air all round, it only seems to do this when I am either downloading or watching something downloaded from I-player, not from anything else and didn't do it before I loaded the new I-player.
I've just uninstalled it again.
When it streams anything, it seems very slow and keeps stopping although it has always done that, think I've just got a slow connection.0 -
I take it back about the I-player. I have uninstalled it.
I have just been reading a long thread on here, nothing else running, nothing downloading, I-player gone, and its just cut off again.
Felt all round it and it doesn't seem particularly hot, so I've no idea now.0 -
I've done that but don't understand what I am looking for. Looking at the temperature readings, they are within what it says is min and max.0

The min and max are what your CPU has run at, basically, the coolest it's been and the hottest it's been. The first column (After the Core #) is the current temp it's running at.
The last column, load, is the load on that CPU Core.
The TJ Max you can see will usually be the temp at which your CPU will shut down to save damage.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Thank you, it doesn't look as though it is/was an overheating problem. The TJmax says 90 deg. The two core maximums are 64 deg and 62 deg.
This morning it was on for three hours and didn't shut down.
I'm doing another back up at the moment - just in case!!0 -
we've had this problem with 3 separate laptops in our house and worked out that it was the power lead from the charger that was either working loose or wasn't quite in properly and it was just a matter of fiddling with it until the power came back on. of course yours could be something totally different0
