Excess charges on removals

A friend of mine employed a removal firm for moving house contents from A to B. They costed the job and quoted a price. They collected the load from A and were paid in full in cash.
En route to B the vehicle was stopped by police and found to be overweight and fined. They then called up a second van to carry the excess.
Goods were delivered to B and the driver said the boss would be in contact about the additional cost.
Can anyone think of a justification for levying an extra charge?

Apart from the removals company attempting to get the extra money to cover the loss due to their !!!! up, no.
Does you friend have a copy of the quoted figure and also a receipt showing this same amount as having been paid in full?0 -

Does he not have any paperwork with the quote! Don't they usually give the customer a copy with x amount of cubic ft?
Are they a reputable well known company or a local man with a van type?
I would say a local man with a van type. They asked for cash only.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
Not your problem if they messed up and incurred costs!0

Shouldn't the company know how much they can carry, so they're at fault for overloading the van?Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 0650

Unless there's some muscle at home, I wouldn't be messing around with this. It could turn extremely nasty. How much was the fine? Are they asking for the fine or just for the second van? At the end of the day if they'd realised they needed an extra van they'd have quoted for it and charged so in some ways it's no different.
If it's a reputable firm tell them to whistle dixie. X0
