At What Stage do Sellers Sign the Contract?

Hi,

I was just wondering if buyers and sellers sign the exchange contracts at around the same time or if sellers actually sign it over much earlier on and the buyers signature finalizes it?

We are just playing a waiting game at the moment for the final bits to be sorted before we go in to the solicitors and sign but we also know that our sellers are due to go away in a few weeks so was wondering if we may have a bit more waiting for them to get back or if they would have already signed their bit already?

Assuming both are using soliciors, the buyer and seller will each sign a (separate) copy of the contract, at their leisure, in advance of Exchange, and give them, undated, to their solicitors.

On the date of Exchange, the solicitors will speak on the phone, agree Exchange, date the contracts, and then put them in the post to each other.

When we went in to sign contracts it took about and hour and half as our solicitor went over the whole contract with us, plus the other bits of paperwork that were needed. There was no mention (I don't think) of the other side signing at the same time, I don't think it has to be done at the same time. I would think that if your sellers are going away then they will make sure they have signed before they go and then their solicitors can just tie up any loose ends in their absence.

We have signed our contracts nearly 3 weeks before our buyers have. Increasingly frustrating waiting for Exchange/Completion.

If it's any consolation, we signed ours (we're the buyers) 6 weeks ago, we're waiting on the seller!
