    Hi all.

I can really recommend Allen Carr. I know three or four people who read the book several years ago and have never smoked a single cigarette since. I think it is one of those things that works for some but not for others. I did read the book and gave up for a whole six months but a car crash had me reaching for the cigarettes and just one or to "calm my nerves" had me hooked again.

I have just decided to give up altogether without the help of any aids. I suppose the ban has urged me on somewhat but I have really really wanted to give up for ages so its a natural progression to have a good go.

I have just decided to never EVER smoke another cigarette again. Its only been four days and I feel great already. Yes there are cravings and withdrawals but I am ignoring them and distracting myself as much as possible. The withdrawals are not going to kill me and thats what I keep telling myself. I am free and that is making me smile. I am looking at smokers in a whole new light. THEY ARE CAUGHT IN THE TRAP BUT NOW I AM FREE!!!

Well its been two weeks and I am so proud of myself that I felt compelled to share my acheivement with you lot.

I have smoked for 20 years and had been wanting to stop for a good while. For various obvious reasons such as health, money saving etc but the most important factor is for the sake of my children. I would never want them to end up smoking when they are older so I felt the time was right to have a good go at quitting for good.

I have got to say that I have found it so easy. It has been difficult at times particularly when the "withdrawal pangs" have surfaced. Amazingly when these came on I felt like exercising or running around frantically to distract myself. They do disappear within a minute so it is not like that feeling is a permanent one.

I really thought being near other smokers would bother me but it has not one iota. I am not deprived, I am celebrating the fact that I am free of the habit forever. More cash, no more nipping outside the pub or wherever for a quick fag. I can smell the shampoo in my hair.

I have had ONE moment of temptation when I got a bit tiddly on the booze with my mates but I was sensible enough to realise that I have made a permanent decision.

IT IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME!!!!!

I stopped smoking 2 week tomorrow and I'm just wondering if there is anyone out there who would like a quit smoking buddy? or whatever you call them.

I was a 12 a week day / 20 on a weekend if drinking, and im now on the patches. Just thought it would be a good idea to have someone to help and for them to help me, tips, moments of weekness etc.

No matter what the weather I always used to go outside to smoke, I never smoked in the house, even before the kids coz I hated the smell of it. I know its stupid but I just loved smoking, as soon as oh got in from work id be straight out in the garden. Im finding going out to the pub and not smoking a very hard thing to imagine so im staying in till I feel more confident - drink always got me back on them, thought id get away with just having a few (a packet!) when i was out and thought id be ok, but obviously it got me back on them. The no smoking ban wouldn't bother me coz im used to going out anyway.

Im in my 30's, have a 1 year old and a 3 year old and im determind to stay stopped this time ( I stopped each time we tried for a baby, all the way through both pregnancies and then started when baby was 3 months and 4 months).

    Right i'll stop rambling now.

Well done. I have been off them for 6 weeks todays. I was 20 a day  The first 2 weeks were with patches then I forgot to put one on one day and haven't had any patches since. I am 41 and had smoked on and off since I was 15. I have started a running programme and love it. I have put on a few pounds but will deal with that. The only problem I am having at the moment is I now have a temper. I never had one before. I feel very angry for no reason and I am told this is also a withdrawal symptom. I have had a few cravings over the last few days but I am not going to give in to the nicotine. I am much richer too :D

    Hi all.

Has anyone had any success with Champix yet? Haven't gotten around to quitting this time yet but have tried pretty much all of the other options without any success over the years.

Yes and no! My friend has stopped smoking with the aid of Champix but unfortunately her blood pressure became so high she has had to stop taking it.

It works by masking the smoking "pleasure" receptors apparently. It's over a week since she had the last Champix tablet and she's had no cravings at all, however she feels quite different now. She's only just beginning to get her sense of taste and smell back (non smoking not non Champix!) a sort of delayed reaction I think.

If your blood pressure is normal then it may very well not affect you, hers was already a bit high. It certainly killed the "need" to smoke stone-dead, she said she felt like she'd never smoked!!!
Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise (as you would be required to visit your GP's surgery as she was and be monitored weekly for first 5 weeks then fortnightly) - she needed to be on BP tablets but wouldn't have known if she hadn't done this.

Everyone is different and can tolerate different things at different levels. If it was easy to quit smoking then there wouldn't be so many NRT's available on the market, or books written, or discussions like this!

I started a thread over the the Debt Free Wannabe board back in May encouraging others to give up with me, we've had a lot of successes, I've stumbled a few times but I'm back on track now thankfully.

Pop over and take a look at the first post, we've compiled a list of links of useful quitting smoking sites and information. Plus a list of what's good about not smoking, it might help some of you if you're thinking of quitting or have quit and thinking of starting again!!

This is a small piece from the Lancashire Evening Post on Monday I am not a smoker but this is crazy

Fishergate centre bosses who banned smoking in the open-air car park say people caught lighting up will be banned from shopping there for six months and fined £50.

A string of readers – many non-smokers – have contacted the Lancashire Evening Post to say the measures were too heavy-handed and would discourage them from visiting the centre

The laws do not apply to open-air parking but Fishergate managers say they are entitled to enforce their own rules as it is a private car park.

Its now 3 weeks, 2 days, 23 hours and 35 minutes since I had my last cig. Started with the patches, then went on to the 2mg gum coz like you, I forgot to put a patch on one day, but feel like I still need something to have at hand for those little moments of darkness, even if it is jusy in my head. It is hard but its worth it, just hope I stay off them for good this time.

As for the temper, Im sooo pleased you mentioned that coz im getting a bit worried about mine, im starting to lose my temper much much quicker and at things that wouldn't normally make me fly off the handle and I don't like it; im like a raging idiot at times. Does this get better?

    Thanks for replying.
