I want to stop smoking. I get through 10 a day and do not smoke anywhere but in my garage. My o.h does not smoke. I gave up last year with patches for after two weeks I felt deprived and started getting depressed. I have read that this is a common occurance and if I could just get rid of the feeling that I was deprived I think I would crack it. I intend having another go either next Monday or the Monday after. Starting to prepare myself. Hopefully I can come on here for support0

Asda's free mag (July) has some tips on how to quit - also, I think like most places they have special offers on nicotine replacement therapy too.
The best advice I can give (as an ex-smoker) is take each waking hour at a time.
Don't even think about tomorrow or next week or the rest of your life without a ciggie. It helped me, anyway.:wave:0 -
Pumpa - the reason you find it so hard is that you dont want to stop yet - thats fine, I'm sure one day you will. You may say you want to, but read your posts - full of reasons why you should smoke.
I was the same but it took hubby having a heart attack to change my mind & I'm finding the patches are working well - Yes I have smoked on the patch but I realised that that was because I was stressed & didn't feel I had failed so didnt give up, just restarted the 'not smoking' as soon as I felt a bit better.(it did mean a little more will power the following morning tho lol)
I saw my doctor to get a prescription for the patches & they also have a no smoking clinic for support in other ways - I found out that they recommend that you start going to the clinic before you are fully ready to stop to help deal with the emotional effects etc....this might be an option for you too Pumpa ready for when/if you decide to stop (its better to say stop smoking btw than quit or give-up as the last two reinforce the failure side before you start lol)

I decided to try (again) to stop smoking and visited the practise nurse at my doctor's surgery. I used 16 hour patches because I had previously tried 24 hour patches and had problems sleeping. I used the patches for about 6 weeks but stopped using them because they started to upset my stomach, I have used 2mg (lower strength) fruit gum since (when the urge to smoke hits!!) I find the 4mg gum too strong.
I haven't had a cigarette since 13th April 07, I am really pleased with my progress and am hoping that I don't slip this time - I have never gone without a cigarette for this long before though, so hopefully, with willpower I will have cracked it this time. :j
On the down side I have put on about 10lb, all my clothes are straining at the seams!
Good luck to everyone who is trying to quit, it's not easy but well worth it in the long run.

My partner and I are in France at the moment - visiting my parents. They thought we stopped smoking in January 2006!! But we hadn't really...
Anyway, we obviously can't smoke at all out here and decided to use it as a 'quitting tool'. We had our last cigarette at 5.30am on Tuesday 3rd July just before we hit the airport. We haven't had one since and we just decided to go cold turkey.
It's the best thing we ever did..
We smell divine. We've walked up hills that we would have shuddered at before! We can taste everything properly. We can BREATHE! We just feel so much better. Fortunately, we haven't even been irritable. Some little cravings now and again but nothing a glass of water doesn't fix or a good old teeth cleaning session. We're drinking a lot more alcohol than we would normally and still no cravings...it's weird! I know it's not easy but I really feel that being in a different environment has helped - we haven't got the usual day to day routine to deal with. Fingers crossed we can keep it going when we get home. We fly back on the 17th July so send us some good vibes! pumpa - I would urge you (and others who agree that it is all psychological) to get Neil Casey's "The Nicotine Trick". It's only 6 quid :money: and it works on the principle of retraining your subconcious. It worked for me (see sig), when everything else I had tried failed . He explains it all IMO, then gives you exercises to tell your subconcious brain that you don't need to smoke. Once yuor subconcious has cottoned on to this fact, you just stop. I wasn't convinced when I heard about it (on this very site!), but it got me off cigs after many many years.

Hi all.
I can really recommend Allen Carr. I know three or four people who read the book several years ago and have never smoked a single cigarette since. I think it is one of those things that works for some but not for others. I did read the book and gave up for a whole six months but a car crash had me reaching for the cigarettes and just one or two to "calm my nerves" had me hooked again.
I have just decided to give up altogether without the help of any aids. I suppose the ban has urged me on somewhat but I have really really wanted to give up for ages so its a natural progression to have a good go.
I have just decided to never EVER smoke another cigarette again. Its only been four days and I feel great already. Yes there are cravings and withdrawals but I am ignoring them and distracting myself as much as possible. The withdrawals are not going to kill me and thats what I keep telling myself. I am free and that is making me smile. I am looking at smokers in a whole new light. THEY ARE CAUGHT IN THE TRAP BUT NOW I AM FREE!!!
