There's nothing wrong with having done nothing - what's wrong is that the money wasn't used a little more carefully to either last a lifetime, or to develop skills/buy a business so she never had to go cap in hand to employers begging for a low paid job she'll get rejected from.

With £800k, if that's the actual story, there comes a time when you're down to your last £100k and think "Uh-ho, I need to think this through a bit ...."

Wow, I don't know how I'd get out of bed at all in the mornings if I'd done that!!

I've always said if I ever won a life changing amount I'd either still work part time (I actually do enjoy my job for the most part) or volunteer with the spare time. I couldn't sit around and do nothing. Maybe it's because I had 3 1/2 years of my life where I was too ill to work that I don't ever want to go back to not having a job. Being productive for the most part keeps me stable, I would get bored pretty quickly if I didn't have a reason to get up (and probably be depressed again)
