And that is fine. I am just suggesting that rather than talking about hypothetical situations, advice is actually provided to the original posters question.

The OP has only stated the he gets HB and Council Tax but he must be getting some other form of benefit as he is looking for work.
He also states that wife may work between 16-18hrs per week, at NMW she would earn £100.96 to £113.58. Income needs to be exact when benefits are involved, otherwise you can soon come unstuck.
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

He won't know how much until he applies for it. There are income disregards and allowances so he might be better off in fact. Also worth looking into the gross salary in case there is some chicanery going on with the employer.

Bit confused. I'm not an expert but surely if the OP is out of work, and their partner earns so little, and they both qualify for HB and CTB, that implies they are probably eligible (and claiming) Job seekers allowance.

If they're claiming Jobseekers allowance that is the benefit that income tends to be subtracted from first.

So... is the OP claiming JSA, or are they not eligible for it for some reason?
