Coal Buster Grant

Having read on the forum about warm front grants for central heating, I got excited momentarily. Unfortunately my friend did not qualify as he does not have a disability element to his working tax credit. His elderly mother lives with him and gets pension credit and attendance allowance, since she has alzheimers, but he still did not qualify since she does not own the house and pays no rent. All was looking hopeless until they suggested he contact a different energy advice helpline in Kent. It seems a local organisation has different criteria for grants. For them the disability element does not matter just earning under £15,000 ish. Which he does, way below. So he is entitled to a COAL BUSTERS grant of up to £4,000, which should get central heating installed.

So thanks to everyone who contributes to this forum, because without all the things you write about, we would never have thought of applying for a grant. He would have had to go another cold and potentially dangerous winter using fires in the house. Not easy when his mum often forgets to turn them off.

You dont need a disability element for tax credit as long as you get under 15.5k think thats the limit, we were just over but get a small amount of council tax back which then made us qualify. We applied to warmfront and initially got turned down as over limit when then applied for council tax benefit and got it. They are coming tomorrow to fit a thermostat for CH.
