Banned from Cex shop.

Hi
Hope i'm posting in right place.
Basically my husband set up an account with the CEX shop, and we traded in a load of dvd's our children were to old for, or ones we'd never watch again. All good.
We were going christmas shopping end of November 2013 (it was black friday), and took along, my old Kindle, my old Galaxy Ace phone (pay-as-you-go), an an old i-phone which they refused as it didn't vibrate. The other 2 were tested by them, all fine, and exchanged for credit for the store.
We use the credit to buy games for our boys (and hubby) as we buy most of our games from there, we are not bothered that they are not new releases.
I finally went to a contract phone last month, so hubby took in my Galaxy S, (Pay-as-you-go) where he was told in front of all the customers that they could not do it as he was banned!
After a lot of why's which was met with shrug's, "we don't have to tell you", they said it was because we had sold a blocked phone to CEX (name of store we took them to). My hubby said, it couldn't of been as it was a PAYG, after they had said it must of been a cancelled contract phone. He asked why he wasn't notified, as they have all his contact details, met with shrugs again, and why they had accepted it, and why it had only just happened after 3 months. He was just asked to leave the store.
I guess i'm just asking if this is right?
I do know they won't be getting our custom again.
Can anyone shed any light on it for me. Have e-mailed them, but not holding my breath, as it seems they don't reply having googled them.
Thanks for any info. x

CEX like any other retailer or establishment can trade with who ever they like so they don't have to trade with you.

They have given you a reason but they don't even have to do that.

Ps I should point out that reason cant be for race, religion or in any way discriminatory reasons.

They can ban who they like, although i would ask for an explanation as to why they believe the phone was blocked.
Do you have proof of purchase with the imei number somewhere to prove it was yours? Payg phones can be blocked too if they get stolen, obviously if it was secondhand when you purchased it then this could be a reason, same as if the company blocking another mobile entered the wrong details by mistake.
:hello: Hiya, I'm single mom, avid moneysaver and freecycler, sometimes  but definatly :D
  • I guess it is their reason that is upsetting. Just a ban would be bad enough, but he said they made him feel like a dodgy dealer. lol.
We went to them as we thought it would be easier than ebay, seems we were wrong.
Think i'll just bin any old mobiles from now on.

  • No, i bought it new from O2 a couple of years back (could even be slightly longer), so i don't think i'd of kept anything from that long ago, (usually a year) might have a quick look later to make sure.
I haven't reported it as stolen, so not sure on that one. x

It doesn't sound like they want it!

They can 'ban' you for any reason they so desire (provided it's not discriminatory), so best to suck it up and move on and find somewhere else!

(If it helps, I've found that it's only in rare occasions that Cex offer the best trade in prices. I traded in probably in excess of 200 items at one point made up primarily of DVDs and various electrical items. I think Cex offered the best price in around 10 items and the others got traded in elsewhere)

If I'm honest, I was expecting this thread to be racier ;)

Unless cex have messed up big time then i'm inclined to believe that there may possibly be some truth in what they have stated, especially when it comes to consumers trading in items (and especially if you have, by your own admission, been using both contract and payg phones in the past). I'm just speculating though because most of the time people think of it in terms of how companies screw over consumers.

If that is the case then just be happy that you got some store credit!

If it is not the case then I apologize but cex can refuse to deal with anyone they choose, for whatever reason (minus the ones previously stated) and that is unfortunate
  • No not using payg and contract! I have used Payg phones since my first phone many many years ago. I'm not into brand new phones and keep them some years before getting the next. Only gone onto a contract since Feb, as O2 did hubby a good deal as he had been with them for so long.
Not all of us are dodgy!
Though i had wondered if it was something to do with the contract as i have kept my number, though this only affects the sim card, and it wasn't the phone i was using up till then. That's the one hubby took today, when informed of ban.
Have spoken to hubby again, and we aren't banned from the stores, they are happy for us to buy from them, just not sell them anything!!! :rotfl:

  • Sorry edinburgher, lol. Though my sister once shouted back accross the street to us that she would meet us in the CEX shop, saying it as a word beginning with s. She wondered why people were looking at her and why me and mum were wetting ourselves with laughter. The donut! :)

I thought it'd be something racier too! Do the company know what it looks like? I nearly died when OP said they'd traded in children's dvds!
