New User to MSE...Student Who's annoyed at Job market...

Hello to everyone who reads this.

I am new here to MSE? I really need some help in terms of advice on Career development and here is why?

I graduated 18 months ago with a 2.1 Masters Degree in Computer IT and business which consists in the following over 4 years

IT network security
IT microsoft computer network security.
Programming in Java and other languages
Accountancy and VAT for Business
Network Security
Business skills in E-Commerce & Website design

My career aim is working along the Lines of Technical Support. I also have my A+ Cisco and Microsoft certifications (70-642 windows server 2008 Network infrastructure)

Now when applying for roles i keep getting told i have no Experience or over qualified and i was wondering

"How do you get experience in this type of work when no one is hiring you".

So i am armed to the teeth in I.T qualifiactions my previous work also was in call centers/Retail ect But at 30 something im sick to death of being considered for telesales jobs from agencies when applying for IT roles as entry level,

Any advise please from anyone who works in this field?

Thanks
Hammy

Welcome to the real world. You've just discovered that you've been lied to by the government, your teachers, your family etc. Every Tom, !!!!!! and Harry has a degree these days and they've paid handsomely for their degree that isn't worth as much as the paper it's written on. There are no decent jobs for young people with average degrees from average universities. Be angry.

One of the few things I agree you on Southend. University should be for the brightest 25% IMO, paid for. Anyone under that level has to do other training.

I would not be in that 25%.at A-level

  • I think the problem with IT degrees is that by the time they teach you something, or even manage to pull together a textbook on it, the tech itself has moved on. Your degree looks like it has given you a good breadth, but what area do you want to focus on? Desktop support, programming etc?

    Thanks for the Reply

I am looking mostly at all angles i love Programming such as C++ and java and other front end Programming but enjoy mostly Networking, I have experiences i taught myself in VMwere and TCP/IP and technologies and also other operating systems such as OSX Apple ect or lunix Distros ect (application development like android or IOS)

The only new development is in windows 8 O/s were still in windows 2008 servers like R2 for example and i was qualified by that not by degree But micro soft exams which i took a loan out for.

This response is a little personal in some respects as no one has actually lied to me I am 30 years old now and have worked since i was 16 years old in every mundane Job going from most agency work in Call center to Cleaning and General warehousing and Sales work Before i Decided to go back to University. Whatever i did it was about pride of work and not being in front of the D.H.S.S dole Ques if avoided. But thanks for the reply i do agree to a point on your evaluation That degrees these days are given to many with money however not exactly true in some points as you have to conduct the work to get it.

Before that also i took A level and N.V.Q apprenticeships which never got me anywhere either So yes Tony Blair has a lot to answer when he rearguard his education speech years ago, Which working at that time Got me to re think about my degree was i hear recruitment firms ask me "Do you have a degree" which prompted me to go further because of these types of people who conduct the interviews in my life seemed to think your useless without one.

Now it's Kinda "Oh we will call you or your too overqualified"

Kinda funny because when i was younger i was in demand now i am a little older an i feel like it's yesterdays news. Please excuse the way i sound,

To be quite honest i am fed up but not Angry as hate is a bad thing, And it is does not suit my persona very well. I am intellengent and focused But i always had a thing for computers since 1990's in terms of building and configurations and the rest.

I have personal debt around my neck of thousands of pounds in terms of loans and student loans yet at present time no way to pay for them at all because i cannot advance into the career i seek.

My ideal role would be at present like call center role in IT helping people fix issues such as broadband 1st line technical support ect. But i cannot even get into that Even with call center experiences i have had in past

I was just hoping for some advise on any type of work experiences or voluntary to try to show my skills so possibly i could get the career i am after at last or how to show these skills i have also instead of being conducted for crap sales jobs ive already worked :)

I am sorry for prolonging this post but I just seem stuck and dont know my next move thats why i am here and thanks again
  • The student loans don't matter as they are earnings based.

Just keep going, keep trying and sell yourself. You may have to take a low paid job in the industry to start with and then jump around from one position to another once you get this experience.

If you can, go see people directly. Also, offer to volunteer somewhere for 6 months?

Not easy and I wish you well.

  • I would suggest you use this thread as a diary type thing, I have noticed a couple other members doing something similar and it seems to bring the positivity out for them and progressed their careers and lives.

It only takes one person saying yes.

  • MY OH is an IT consultant. To give you an idea, he took a very basic job at a University in their desktop support. It was rubbish money, but it got him a good grounding. Now, I just kind of nod when he tells me what he does. Essentially applications and licensing. My Brother does programming in C++ and he started working for one of his mate's Dad's company. Like you say, you just need that break!

I know voluntary work may not be great money wise, but if you can find a small local charity, you could set them up a system etc, then they can act as a reference for a perm role. At the moment, you need to get some basic relevant experience one way or another.

Have you thought about looking abroad?

In the UK you should set up job alerts with all the banks, investment banks etc Also support services like Mitie and Xerox. Network rail also have a lot of IT jobs sometimes.

Also JP Morgan do a technology graduate scheme although that may only be in Glasgow.
All that glitters is not gold.

Think i will do that after today was the worst day had some arrogant Agency H.r team who from aspects tried to recruit me for Telesales, I asked her if there was any technical support type call centre if accepted the role i could possibly advance to in company work and she said no because i have no experiences & it was just for selling PPI insurance which i cannot see myself doing as the last job i had was Selling insurance also but hated the people i contacted as they would ask the same questions like

    "how you get this number"
"your a scam....(swearing down phone ect)"
"get a proper job"....sometimes they were right about that one lol :)

however it does state i am a new student graduate in IT ect on CV but mostly my past work in call centers. So how do i show my new skills off and get round that "your experiences role"
