What happens when you press CTRL T

A new tab page opens, but as a new tab, not as my homepage

Then that is the problem. Really without looking at everything it's going to be difficult to solve. Try Tools/internet options/tabs and then halfway down make sure "When a new tab is opened, Open"
and select "Your first home page", then click Ok then apply (if you can) if not it may be easier going to Chrome, lol

Right, I've downloaded Chrome, blurghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh :( although now when I click on a new tab, Google chrome opens as the new page.

I've lost IE toolbar, and when I type into the search bar, how come it's at the top?

Ha ha. You need to go to the small square top right. Looks like 3 lines one on the others. Click on it and select settings then "On startup" select "Open a specific page or set of pages" and type in google.co.uk.
Then move down to "Show home button" then change page to google.co.uk not forgetting www in front. When you select new tab now you should get google on each page unless you open a new window then you have to click on the little house which will take you to your home page

You'll be okay once you get the hang of it. IE has so many problems as you've found out. You have to accept that mucking around with computers is half the fun. What are you going to be using it for?
