OP I am sorry to read about your situation, but I agree with the above poster as it seems you have had a lucky escape from your ex and his family and paying the £500 would ensure you never have to see them again hopefully.

Me? I'd pay up and move on while letting everyone know how poor they were to want you to pay what should have been a gift to their son. Lucky escape I think.

I will be paying as cant afford to have a court judgment issued against me and possibly affecting my credit history.

For those inquiring ... he did get his ring back. I was never keeping it even after he threatened to break into my house. Trust me this was not a nice guy and I didnt see his true colours until the end.
