Make sure the quote is for everything, electric supply, condense drain to outside etc. Plus if looking at different models look at the noise rating inside and out as some units can be very noisy.

Thanks for all the replies. This covers everything I don't pay anything on top. He also said the AC don't use much electricity as it's a new model and it's 12,000 for one room should cover everything. I asked him about noise he said it is very quite.

You guys think £1400 is a good price? All I can find is an AC is around £800 the one I was quoted. He has told me he has to purchase items to fit the AC in also and his cost will be around £1300-£1400.

It's a Toshiba AC or an Panasonic whichever I choose. Shall I go ahead with it?

The quote sounds reasonable to me.

Just double-check whichever model you get is an Inverter type (as someone mentioned earlier) - pretty much any modern unit should be, but worth checking - they are *much* quieter, and *much* more energy efficient.

I was amazed at how little power mine took, actually. Even running flat-out in max cooling mode, the power consumption is less than 1kW per unit! In normal running, maintaining the room at the set temperature, it pulls about 300W, and that is intermittent. I was expecting it to be much higher than this.

They do work very, very well as heaters, too - I reckon they probably could be more cost-effective than gas central heating, but I tend to avoid using them for heating because I don't want to wear them out un-necessarily :rotfl:

Edit: Just one additional comment I would make - if noise is likely to be an issue for you, if you possibly can, try to have the outside units mounted on the ground on a concrete plinth, rather than on wall brackets. With them wall-mounted, you will get some noise inside the house from the compressor. Mounting the outside units on the ground almost completely eliminates this rumbling noise.

Very MSE, but a KVM switch will be even cheaper, for the two PC's ;)

Hang on, £12000 for the AC unit and another £1400 for installation?

    No, it's not £12,000, it's a 12000 BTU air conditioning unit.

When you do get the a/c unit, it's worth investing in a water butt or some other large container, to collect the water for gardening purposes. You will be amazed at how much you collect.

    ^^^ This!

Also, if you can keep the condensate water clean enough, it's also good for topping up batteries or using in steam irons, as it's effectively free distilled water :-)
